SamRewritten is an open source Steam Achievements Manager for Linux

Posted by , | Views: 11,674

Want an easy way to view, lock and unlock Steam Achievements on Linux? SamRewritten seems like a very handy application to do all of that and more.

The developer just announced a brand new release with a bunch of new features. Messing with achievements by manually unlocking them or locking them should be reliable, all your games should show up, it dynamically finds your Steam folders, a bunch of UI improvements and more.

I find browsing achievements on Steam to be a bit of a nuisance, so using this purely to view them is actually quite handy. However, if you do plan of using it, a word of caution: something like this could well be against Valve's terms if you use it to unlock achievements. I couldn't find a definitive answer on that though.

Why would you want to use it to unlock achievements? Well, personally I don't pay too much attention to Steam Achievements usually but for some people they are important and I do understand that. Certain games do have bugs that can actually stop you getting achievements, or games requiring online servers that no longer work can prevent you getting them too, so this helps with that.

As always, we provide the info, you do what you wish with it.

You can find the release on GitHub. If you're on Arch Linux, there's also an AUR package you can try.

Hat tip to Mr Doomguy.

I tested it on a few broken achievements (not unlocking in-game despite fulfilling the requirements) and it didn't work for any of them. It might work for cheating (unlocking achievements that work correctly) but doesn't work where it's really needed, not for me at least.

Like the 7 days Evil Knievel achievement not unlocking even though I've broken plenty of legs.

You can only get VAC banned if you run cheat software whilst on VAC-protected servers.

English is not my native language. When I said VAC banned, I mean to have the steam account banned.

Anyway. I think the possibility of reset the Steam achievements and, why not, the playtime of individual games should be an official feature in the steam client...

The general consensus of using SAM is that it is -extremely- unlikely Valve will ban your account for using such software. However it's always "use at your own risk". Valve really have 0 interest in people cheating/fixing their achievements. You're more likely to get banned from achievement tracking websites if you use such things for using that software.

well how this works?? suppose I mess with some salien stats or lunar sale stats... because some of those sales achievements roll over points to the next sale... would that work?? I would get points in the next sale??

Besides it's a well known fact that the ppl that get the most achievements in those sales are cheating using scripting and macros, and valve doesn't give a darn.

It's just for game achievements. Also those roll-over points are mostly based on how much you buy, which you would get banned for if you found a cheat for them as they have monetary value. People cheated the games with scripts but there was no monetary value in winning. Only thing gained was different badges.

There is an achievement in The Stanley Parable that you get my going to settings and turning it on. You can also turn that achievement off in that same settings window.

SAM is just doing the same thing but for every achievement

There should be a tool to create achievements

I just recently ran into an issue where Age of Empires II: HD Edition wasn't correctly registering that I'd completed all the Battles of the Forgotten, so I tried SamRewritten out to unlock the achievement in question and it worked fine.

I like getting achievements as a way to push myself and to look back on so I'll probably only use this to unlock bugged achievements, but I like the idea of being able to re-lock them—could be fun if I'm replaying a beloved classic to lock some/all of the achievements and experience getting them again.

Edit: Huh, I've just discovered an ID clash: Torchlight and Just Cause 2: Multiplayer Mod both have the Steam ID 41500. I've got the former, but SamRewritten thinks I have the latter.

Edit 2: Oh, ok, it also displays Torchlight in the list and I can access the achievements for it, so it shows all possibilities if there's a clash. Interesting.
