I've tested a bit more and it seems like the issue only occurs above "Simple" graphical settings.
While there's of course reasons to support open source engines I don't see how it's relevant to this discussion; having the source code available to me would not have aided me here, I don't think. That said, I'll happily take recommendations for game engines that work well (and are currently suppported!) :) I used Construct before but it was quite buggy, and I've been considering GoDot, but I don't know how easy it is or what it's 2D game capabilities are like.
I recommend giving it a go if you are interested!
However, it's always better to use something you personally want to use ;)
