While there's of course reasons to support open source engines I don't see how it's relevant to this discussion; having the source code available to me would not have aided me here, I don't think. That said, I'll happily take recommendations for game engines that work well (and are currently suppported!) :) I used Construct before but it was quite buggy, and I've been considering GoDot, but I don't know how easy it is or what it's 2D game capabilities are like.

You should go on the IRC channel. Freenode #godotengine. They're really helpful there. If you're a developer who's used to Unity, sure, use it. If you haven't got experience with either engine, then obviously go for the open-source one.
