https://www.gamingonlinux.com/articles/playing-quake-4-on-linux-in-2018.11017 I was able to get the game up and running again for my son to play.
I also found my SE Enemy Territory: Quake Wars, Aaaaa the first real BF style multiplayer game that work really well under Linux, the memories :). Might see if will still run in 2020.

It is not entirely game breaking, but annoying and hard to resolve.
a later update and the fact that the DRM (punkbuster) broke and is a dead joke
i lost my account info, my statistics, and basically started over
since then i have never played it again
it wasnt a bad game really. it just wasnt amazing either
i can tell you punkbuster is dead. if nothing fixes that then i doubt anyone is playing anymore.
The last time I was able to log in and play, there were still a couple of people playing ETQW.
It's still a great game.
