Title: Weird Ubuntu problem

Recently I convinced my mom to get a new PC since hers was getting old. Subsequently I installed Ubuntu on her old computer. Sadly I don't remember the soecs at all, other than the fact that it is 5 to 7, year old Samsung laptop, with some weak Nvidia GPU, some Core i5 and a 1TB HDD. However I ran unto some major problems after chsnging sime setting I forgot the name of. I hope somebody here can help me. It seems to be stuck in activities mode? Pressing Alt-F2 and "r" for restart will probably help temporary.

If it's similar to what's discussed in the links below it might be caused by enabling icons on the desktop, some extension, or applications like Conky.
