Poke53280 released the source code for the game several years ago; & someone made a SDL2 port shortly afterwards. I remember getting & compiling it; & it played just as well as it did on windows xp.
I later lost that drive; & didn't know where to get the source all over again.
But future generations need not suffer any such hardship, because the game is now out on flatpak!
https://flathub.org/apps/details/io.github.hurricangame.hurrican
& the source is here:

The original Poke53280 website is long gone, but here's a wayback machine snapshot (in German) from around the time when the game came out: https://web.archive.org/web/20070626045107/http://www.poke53280.de/artikel/index.php?artcat=0
The folks on lemon64 were very impressed by it: https://www.lemon64.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=23618
Members from Poke53280 went on to found this company: https://www.winterworks.de/project/hurrican/
I forgot how fun this game is and it ticks a lot of the original Turrican boxes. :)
CRT effect goodness!
