Short answer: No.

Long answer: Not really. You can install a different distro, but that's not really "changing the DE," and if you make the filesystem not read-only to install a new DE it'll be wiped out by the next OS update.

Wouldn't a dual boot (from external media) with a "normal" distro be easier?
