Title: WARNING: Do NOT Install Latest Nvidia 470 Driver Update
Caldathras 3 hours ago
I'm not sure how many GoL members have a Kepler or older Nvidia GPU but this is just a heads-up. Canonical has pushed an update (470.256.02-0ubuntu0.24.04.5) that will screw up any Ubuntu-based system that installs it. A neat bit of sabotage that forces your system to transition to the incompatible 535 series driver and causes a ton of headaches while trying to recover your system.

Essentially, Canonical no longer wants to support the 470 series driver.

The push took a lot of Linux Mint users by surprise as Update Manager doesn't exactly warn you what the update is going to do. I only caught it because Plasma's Discover breaks the update down to all its components and I noticed the 535 driver in the list.

There are workarounds. Just follow the links for assorted suggestions.

Now I just need to figure out how to get Discover to put the driver update on hold...

Frankly, the potential disaster I managed to avoid from this incident is making me give serious consideration to switching my Kepler laptop over to CachyOS. At least they are still supporting the 470 series driver -- they are patched all way up to kernel v7.0.
