VCMI, the cross-platform open source game engine for Heroes of Might and Magic III has another fresh release out and they've been working on hooking up gamepad support.
If you want to play the classic Heroes of Might and Magic III, the open source engine VCMI is easily the best way on modern platforms and version 1.4.3 is out now with plenty of bug fixes.
While we have fheroes2 for Heroes of Might and Magic II, we also have VCMI for Heroes of Might and Magic III which also continues to advance as a free and open source cross-platform game engine reimplementation.

This is a bit of a double event. Not only has the Heroes of Might and Magic II game engine fheroes2 seen a new release, but a surprise update of VCMI for Heroes of Might and Magic III was also released.
