Need to get the data files from a Windows game on Steam? steamget from Icculus can help
By slapin, 19 September 2017 at 11:42 am UTC

I wonder if it is possible to get game's CD key, as game requires activation (e.g. GTAIV)
so I wonder how to activate version downloaded via steamget as Steam do not give me CD key for it...

Quotesince their original mission was cross-platform indie games.

Well, their original mission had been cross-platform DRM-free indie games(*). But yes, I see them as the ones that made the Linux-Gaming truck roll (again, after Loki failed). BIG kudos for that! A pity the HIBs are so rare nowadays :(

(*)This probably is the root why I still have the something's-not-right feeling when I see 'Indie-Games' that are only available via steam.... :o

While its not concrete 100% laid on to be released for Linux. I do tend to gve 1 man shows a bit more leeway with this than I would if it were a major/ established company saying the same.

Quoting: liamdaweWell that depends what difficulty you're on and how good/bad your run is going.
I don't remember the name, but I always pick one above the normal difficulty. The "hard" equivalent, if you will.

I could really only see you getting short on bullets in the very beginning and if everyone is using guns instead of other weapons. But in that case, it would completely be your own fault. Besides, I don't even think all the NPCs are good with guns.

The game is absolutely awesome! I played for some time already. I just want to have more of everything (especially vehicles) but regardless of anything the game took all my free time for now :)

Too bad nobody streams it on youtube (no serious LP yet) that would get the game more attention.

Good review and I agree with all points except:

QuoteAnother letdown with the combat, is the inability to switch weapons. If you have half of your group wielding guns and you manage to run out of ammo, you’re completely out of luck. That ruined one of my runs pretty quickly and it was a little annoying. It felt like artificial difficulty, considering bullets are also the currency.
Erh, what? 2 hours in the game, you are basically swimming in bullets. Not once in the game was I short on them and I wasn't even grinding, just visiting locations as I went from A to B.
If anything, you have far too MANY bullets.

And I actually think the combat is a good example of how to do combat on a tiny budget. Fancy animations aren't really needed.

Could see… and could not see…
No Tux == No Bucks. Any speculation is pointless; we saw countless times that bait and switch tactic.
Besides, not a day-1 release => not a full price purchise.

That's my opinion, anyway.

Arma 3 for Linux updated to 1.70, it’s now 64bit and solves the texture issue I had

Quoting: evergreenDid you try it? Did they implement Joystick support on linux too? I'm also waiting for joystick working.

I actually have a different issue with Steam (Beta) right now where basically none of my controllers work... in game. Oh, my Steam controller works totally fine in Big Picture mode to browse the menus and things. Then I go to fire up a game and.. no controller detected. Arma 3 doesn't, tried Broforce as well (which used to work).

I swear I did the udev rules fine, but maybe not, and I have to revisit just what's going on there. Unfortunately that means I can't test much at the moment.

Quoting: GuestIt has nothing to do with "the wrapper". We implement DirectInput. However it's implemented on the back of the SDL Gamepad mapping system. To support raw HID devices fully would be a lot more work.

Ouch - this is... unfortunate. One of the biggest draws to a game like Arma 3 is that it's not just a foot-soldier thing; you can hop into vehicles, and especially in the case of aircraft, have relatively realistic flight models and controls. Trying to mouse-and-keyboard that is painful.

I was thinking the same thing. The work would definitely be worth it IMO.

For the controller issues;

Try modifying /etc/modules-load.d/modules.conf and put uinput into it.

# /etc/modules: kernel modules to load at boot time.
#
# This file contains the names of kernel modules that should be loaded
# at boot time, one per line. Lines beginning with "#" are ignored.

I think the game crashing at launch is a good clue as to which side of the fence it sits on, lol.

Watched Cry play a couple of hours of this. Looks really really nice, as a Blade Runner-esque cyberpunk game, as a horror title. The narrative bits are compelling. And the graphics are great. Aside from perhaps a bit too passive gameplay for some people's tastes this might be a new classic. So really glad this is coming to Linux.

The game released and didn't work at all, 3+ weeks later it still doesn't work at all. It uses an FPS Kit, that they didn't actually make.

Also, the Steam reviews "Mostly Negative". Not that Steam reviews should be taken as they are, but they are usually a good indicator something is really wrong.

I think I'm being pretty reasonable about it overall.

Quoting: ElectricPrismWont fix the bad level design.

By 90s gaming standards Super Metroid level design still ranks way higher.

I mean maybe some people are okay with running rediculously far across the map and the bad spacing of the saves.

Also Im not a fan of the map only being updated on save or buying map pieces just to give money a purpose.

The previous Hidden Dreams update added a teleportation skill. Of course you'll have done a fair bit of running back and forth before you get your hands on that upgrade.

Protect your Sheep in 'Operation Sheep Defense', a fast-paced Tower Defense game that's actually good
By Philadelphus, 18 September 2017 at 7:08 pm UTC

QuoteInstead of enemies simply getting from A to B and harming you if they reach B, they have to pick up the sheep and take them to their exit point.
QuoteLevels don't always have a fully pre-defined path for enemies.
QuoteWhat makes it more amusing, is that your sheep will actually attempt to walk back to their original place, if you manage to destroy the unit that captured them. This gives you a chance to protect them, but it also gives the enemy another chance to recapture them away from your main area. A simple, yet very clever idea for such a game.
Those three things are also core features of the excellent tower defense games Defense Grid & Defense Grid 2, only you're protecting your energy cores from aliens. I wonder if they provided inspiration for this game? If you like it you might enjoy them, though only the second one is on Linux.
