The big SteamOS update that drops AMDGPU-PRO in favour of Mesa has left beta
By Geopirate, 6 June 2017 at 8:17 pm UTC Likes: 1

IMO they were too early with SteamOS for their intended use case/audience. These things are supposed to compete with a console that's just plug and play.

As others on the thread have said you need some Linux knowledge to troubleshoot issues. In the next year, we should actually have wider Wayland adoption, merged DC/DAL in mainline and more solid Vulkan infrastructure. Hopefully the Nvidia Wayland issue will also get worked out. They will also move steam over to Debian 9 which has been much smoother for gaming for me at least for the last 6 months or so compared to Debian 8.

Quoting: dubigrasuI use SteamOS and since I'm still continuously use it since it was released, you can imagine that it does the job and my thoughts about it are pretty positive.
Except for this: http://steamcommunity.com/groups/steamuniverse/discussions/1/1291816880499593115/

This has made me crazy for a few months now, ever since I discovered it was happening with the Steam client. I could make it happen by starting BPM, and then starting a game in BPM. BAM! CPU would skyrocket and stay high until I left BPM and returned to the Desktop client.

I avoid BPM now. I've reconfigured my Steam Controller configs so they don't use any of the on-screen, BPM reliant menus, and I design my new configs without menus too, which is a shame since these are powerful tools.

Thanks for the link to your Steam post, it was very informative. And thanks, too, for all your testing and troubleshooting. If Valve were to put forth half the effort you have, it would be fixed soon.
Hey, thanks for the confirmation. I took the liberty to mention your post in that bug report, hope you don't mind.

Quoting: Solitary... because if the games are DRM free, they are DRM free on Steam too and if they are not, then they aren't and won't ever be on GOG anyway...

This is actually not true. It's surprising to me how many games are available DRM free from GOG and Humble, and are DRM'ed on Steam. Off the top of my head, both Firewatch and Hand of Fate are available DRM free from GOG, and both are DRM'ed on Steam. I know there's more, but those are the two I remember right now.

Do you have a application for it or do you do it manually? Because if you backup tons of saves manually you must have gone mental by now. :P At least I would have if I are not already. Given games like to throw their save files in one of many locations. Hidden folders, one of the random Steam game ID folders, the game folder, et cetera. Even after the years of CD & DVD games doing it, game saves are still so scattered sometimes. My problem with saves is more a quanity issue than anything, as I game hop a bit. Play one game for a little, go to the next for a few, another, and then rinse and repeat.

Quoting: ShmerlDo you? You'll get same response from Steam, if you use Arch.
I use Arch and I have had people working for Valve with the whole [Valve] tags by their names suggest possible fixes for Arch (Via forums). I even had one suggest trying the steam-native version once in the past. Not to say that it's always the best help, but it's not just "Use Ubuntu". Also, they even chip in a litte sometimes in some of the HTC Vive stuff. Though I do admit I have gotten more help within the community than Valve overall. Nor should I expect help directly from them with such a large userbase. That and they have a F on customer service for trying to automate everything over hiring people, lol. (I wish that would get fixed already).

As for my GoG experince it's more of less the same as "Alm888".

Not saying GoG sucks overall. I still play the gambling game with buying from GoG. As I have 190 games on my GoG account. Of course about 20-30 are from GoG Connect & my games aren't exactly all popular demand games that everyone flocks too. If GoG Galaxy for Linux was out I probably would buy a wider selection. (Given it all worked correctly). Because I will buy a Steam copy over a GoG copy because Steam has cloud saving. Yet now some GoG games get cloud saves with a Linux copy, but no GoG Galaxy. (I just like the security of not losing my game saves).

Oh wow. What a sale! I have 15 games on my whishlist ATM, and 13 of them are on discount.
That's a bit too much to get all of them, even more as there are other ones not on the list that really look nice...
Top candidates on my side would be Infinifactory, Silence, Hollow Knight, maybe Candle and Deponia 4.

As I said, that's something developers should fix, whether game or engine developers, whoever is relevant. Bundling it as a workaround is doable (I did that a few times already and I mentioned it in GOG's Linux FAQ thread), but it's quite a clunky fix if that library especially has security issues.

Some of their DLC is very good.
But some like Protraits in CK2 feel like Horse Armor.
I'm neutral on the issue. I like when they add content , I hate (what I consider to be) over priced fluff.

Quoting: ShmerlDo you? You'll get same response from Steam, if you use Arch. Or more likely you won't get any response altogether. I don't personally use Ubuntu, but I don't expect them to troubleshoot distro specific issues either. They have officially supported distros and that's where you can expect support in case it's needed.

That's besides the point. I was not stupid enough to tell them "Hello, I'm using Fedora…". Instead I checked and made sure that the problem was universal for all distros and actually pointed out that Ubuntu is affected. Moreover, I told them how to fix it: just bundle those libs and append the PATH in the start script; I know they make those installers themselves (GOG came out with a stupid idea to bundle Galaxy installer in every installation package!) and not rely on developers. Everything was basically presented on a silver platter. Their response? "Use Ubuntu"™

Quoting: ShmerlStuff like libcrypto and etc. was removed from Debian testing, and I had to manually fix that. But it's not GOG's problem if developers link against outdated libraries. It's developers' bug. I'd report it to developers to begin with if you want to have it fixed actually.

It is more of the "Game Maker" problem. All those developers are hardly programmers, even less so "Game Maker" gurus. They just used 3rd-party engine (without access to its source code) so they are in no better position than any of us. Ideally, we need to reach out to "Game Maker" devs, but for all those games already using outdated version of the engine… Meanwhile, bundling libs may be a crude solution, but it at least solves the problem. And "Use Ubuntu"™ does not!

Besides the questionable devs with fragile egos , the system was being gamed for trading cards.
Voting groups would vote for the asset flips and get free copies.
Then they would leave fake reviews.
The dev gets the game sold and the voting groups and "dev" make money of the cards.

QuoteIs anyone here actually using SteamOS? What are your thoughts on it?

I installed it a couple years ago with Stephenson's Rocket.. I've done some modifications, but still running it on my TV box.. I like it overall, although it can seem a bit flaky on updates at times (I've had to fix things via command line rescue mode and/or ssh). Overall, though, it does a fine job as a basic game console in BPM. I wish they'd build more advanced game console features into it and media apps though.

Objection! Their Linux support is useless and almost in-existent. Every time I asked for help their response was "Use Ubuntu"™.

Everyone knows "Game Maker" games have unsolved issues with "libcrypto.so.1.0.0" and "libssl.so.1.0.0" which are unavailable even on Ubuntu (there are 1.0.2 versions instead which are NOT compatible with "Game Maker" ). It was pointed out to them multiple times. What did they do? "Use Ubuntu"™

"This War of Mine" is not working for more than half a year? "Use Ubuntu"™

GOG team is sure to talk the talk when it concerns "top-quality user support", but is unable to walk the walk, as it seems. Linux GOG community, on the other hand… I found solutions to all my problems precisely there!

Quoting: ShmerlThe main problem with GOG so far is not some lack of support, but lack of attention from developers / publishers, who don't bother to release Linux versions there even if they do it on Steam.

Like it is our problems! If GOG wants to become something more than a "Witcher Store" or "antique shop", it needs to take action and not just sit on its "fifth point" waiting for developers to notice it. Valve invests in Linux porting ("toGL", port of "Source Engine", agreements with Feral etc.); meanwhile GOG (or "CDProjekt" in general)… does what exactly?

Quoting: SolitarySo to me, distrusting Steam seems petty at best and by that logic, GOG really does not offer much, because if the games are DRM free, they are DRM free on Steam too and if they are not, then they aren't and won't ever be on GOG anyway + there is few developer studios that ignore GOG altogether (like the amazing Croteam)

Apparently there are enough of those who don't trust DRMed services, becasue GOG is gradually growing (see their shareholders report). And regarding developers, if they ignore DRM-free users, they'd ignore them in return. For that matter I don't really have anything good to say about Croteam. Yeah, they have some older games on GOG, but they got too dependent on Steam lock-in (Steamworks and such), and that makes their games Steam exclusives. It's not something I endorse. The good thing is, there are great developers who don't ignore DRM-free users. With GOG's growth, it will be Croteam's loss, not the other way around.

Quoting: Shmerl@Solitary: Their Linux support is good, they actually react to bug reports if they can do anything about it. But you aren't from their core audience (DRM-free users). So you see "support" as replicating features you use in Steam and that for GOG isn't a priority as I said (for Linux).

I see support as releasing games and features they normally offer to others. While DRM-free was always their main sell point, but by itself it only makes GOG an additional service, not a comparable force. But you are right, I am not a DRM-free zealot, I trust Steam enough to buy games there (only games I would not buy are Denuvo covered and always online deals). Steam did not became a main moving force just out of nothing. Valve had big user base (CS, HL), trust, timing and good idea... not just anyone could have done it. So to me, distrusting Steam seems petty at best and by that logic, GOG really does not offer much, because if the games are DRM free, they are DRM free on Steam too and if they are not, then they aren't and won't ever be on GOG anyway + there is few developer studios that ignore GOG altogether (like the amazing Croteam)
