Tomb Raider benchmark video comparison, Linux vs Windows 10
By dubigrasu, 9 May 2016 at 11:34 pm UTC

Quoting: rkfgI've created a script like this:
#!/bin/sh
env __GL_THREADED_OPTIMIZATIONS=1 "$@"

and saved it under the name /usr/local/bin/glto, then I put "glto %command%" to the launch parameters of the game and voila.
Nice idea, thanks.

Looks like both Dead Island Definitive Edition and Dead Island Riptide Definitive Edition are coming to Linux & SteamOS

Just today I thought about Dead Island Riptide, and if it's ever coming to Linux ;)
Have both already, and Riptide is working with wine... but in this case... I'll have to buy both again \o/

The german game magazine 'PC GAMES' is writing that the performance gets massively worse in midgame (several hours in) on Windows systems even with only mid sized galaxys on a high end PC.
Would be interesting to hear if you guys are expiriencing the same.

Valve & HTC launch the Vive VR device, without Linux & SteamOS support

"Message by Support Tech Raymond on Mon, May 9 2016 9:13
Hello Kristofer,

Thank you for contacting Steam Support.
We apologize for the delay.
At this time, SteamVR is not supported on Linux.
You will need to use a Windows based machine to run SteamVR.
We apologize for any inconvenience.
If you have any further difficulty, please let us know - we will be happy to assist you."

HTC has not replied yet. Although I'm completely convinced they lied right out. I filled out an order form with Linux as an option. There was no indication in any correspondence with HTC that this contract could be broken later on.

Not that this stops me from using the Vive, which is an awesome product of course, but this kind of ignorance really pisses me off and I would be satisfied with so little.

QuoteThe first night after playing Stellaris I ended up dreaming about it, and all I wanted to do when I awoke was play it. That’s really something as it’s very rare for any game to engross me in such a way!

...

literally hundreds of hours can be put into a single game

Hmm, sounds like I shouldn't buy this for a while then. At least until the summer holidays.

Holy hell it's a time sink..... I've barely done nowt and 2+ hours gone.

It does make you think a bit, The Music is second to none for mood setting.

Perf is spot on on a 290x @ 1440p on high hovers in the 200's though I admit not graphically demanding compared to other games.

Overall, GG Paradox. Just need to learn to play it better

Quoting: Farmboy0I played some Human Resource Machine but the puzzles are simply not challenging. Still an enjoyable game.

I found some optimization puzzles to be challenging.
Btw, they said that all speed optimization challenges except the obvious case are solvable without loop unrolling:

Didn't suceed without for all of them, though.

I have been going for the size optimization challenges. Mostly this gets you the steps optimization challenge too but not always or I haven't looked hard enough.

Quoting: STiATI want DiRT Rally :-(

The most plausible theory right now about the latest item to appear on the radar is that it's Dirt Rally :) Makes sense since they've already done the heavy lifting of porting the rendering engine.

I've been Playing PA:T (as usual) & the beta community made expansion: Legion. Also se-up a VM so I could play Dark Souls III, twitch streams of Bloodborne really pulled me into the line of games. Since I had the VM up I've also played a little Rocket League with friends (any news about on when the Linux port is actually getting a release?).

I recently tried Tomb Raider but with the camera controls as they are and all those QTEs I find the whole game too horrible to play. The lack of performance doesn't help either. And let no one tell you the game is playable on Mesa 11.2. Thats a blatant lie.

I played some Human Resource Machine but the puzzles are simply not challenging. Still an enjoyable game.

I started with Episode 1 of Supreme League of Patriots yesterday and while I agree with the reviews I find the game interesting enough to continue playing it.

It's my understanding that lack of scaling is a limitation of the Clausewitz engine which is several years old and wasn't designed for ultra-high resolution displays. Rumor is that Hearts of Iron IV will be the last Paradox game to use at least this version of Clausewitz.

I love Crusader Kings II and Europa Univversalis IV, so I'm definitely looking forward to Stellaris.

Valve & HTC launch the Vive VR device, without Linux & SteamOS support
By @limatangoalpha, 9 May 2016 at 5:25 pm UTC

Quoting: HyperdriveA day later my programs were 'lost' from Steam. The option to install them didn't exist anymore. The steamvr button is there but nothing happens when I try to run it. There aren't much of comprehensible error messages too.
Sorry to hear that, I've heard others had issues when using the Steam "Beta" client (Steam > Settings > Account > Beta Participation). The solution was to remove the "Beta Participation" which will return your Steam client to the standard version.

Quoting: HyperdriveNo response from either HTC (which asked which OS I was going to use and gave me all reasons to believe they would support my choice) nor Valve so far. I hope it is because of the weekend.
My experience of HTC's customer support wasn't positive but this appears to be more of a Valve issue (Steam), hopefully the weekend was truly to blame and you'll have feedback soon.

Free to play MMORPG Ryzom launches on Steam with Linux support
By ObsidianBlk, 9 May 2016 at 5:19 pm UTC Likes: 1

Just to put in my two cents...
I decided that, for F2P (with a lvl125 cap on skills), I'd give this game a go.

Graphically, I think the game is quite pleasing... definitely dated, but very pleasing. For a "sci-fi" game most everything has a very earthy tone to it (at least in the beginner area). That may or may not be appealing to some, but I find it quite relaxing.

The starter zone, currently, is active and the biggest thing that stands out to me is that most, if not all, of the conversations are mature and helpful. This last bit could be that most who're interested in playing this game are either long time Ryzom players or long time MMORPG players that preferred the older EQ1 generation of games.

The thing I love most about the game so far... Creating Skills! Other's have mentioned this as a point of interest, and I'm no different. I LOVE this aspect. I'm still learning all of the beginner stuff, so I've only just been introduced to it, but... I freaking LOVE the idea! Add to that the depth of the crafting system... Mmmmm

I've only had the chance to play a total of maybe three or four hours of the game so far, over at least three sessions. I found that, when I had the chance, I actually was looking forward to logging into the game. I can be a little OCD with games, and only a few rare ones can keep my attention for too long. I'm not saying this game is one of those... yet... but it has serious potential.

The game's been around for a while now, so it probably won't out right disappear any time soon, but the one worry I have is, Steam is giving the game an influx of players currently, but I can't tell how much staying power the game will have in the end. I do worry about getting into an online game that, only a few months down the road may become a ghost town. To this, I can only cross my figures.

If anyone has joined the game, feel free to look me up in game and say hello! My character's name is Draydin.

I've got mine downloaded and ready to go, but I should be good and actually do my work first.

That doesn't mean I can't listen to the soundtrack while I work instead, though, and oh my gosh what a soundtrack. Just that alone has me all excited. It's this lovely blend of orchestra and synth, you get lovely ambient pads for a while, and then it swells into this triumphant, epic blend of 80s future themes.

Major, major kudos to Andreas Waldetoft on this.

That's still one of the best FPS ever.

I play Quake single player on QuakeSpasm and QuakeWorld on EZQuake quite a bit.

There's also Yamagi Quake 2 and q2pro for some Quake II fragfest.

If you want to have a quick death match someday I'd be interested.

I wonder why scaling options are so hard to implement on this type of game? I know dropping your resolution is one way of getting around it but that gives you a blurry screen that does my eyes in aswell :)

Thanks for your interest - this video was actually recorded on Linux, and is my primary dev platform.

The progress is rather slow, mainly due to manpower, so if you are / know any devs willing to help out please let us know!

Or just drop by the forum at openapoc.pmprog.co.uk, or IRC (freenode #openapoc) and say Hi :)

What about gamification of survey taking? Some kind of "reward" for doing them? Like a badge or something under a user icon?
