Jason Ekstrand from Intel speaks about Vulkan at FOSDEM 2016
By mrdeathjr, 1 February 2016 at 3:53 am UTC

Quoting: amonobeaxHey guys I know this is a little bit off topic, but aren't you concerned with the choices NVIDIA has been taking lately? ( Long read but worth it: https://www.reddit.com/comments/367qav/ )

I own a NVIDA GPU, but I don't really like how it seems they're using Gameworks as a monopoly tool.

I'm actually very afraid that things like Project Cars (which has PhisiX embedded in the game code) start to happen more and more often. Not only AMD (phisix flooding the CPU) users will suffer but previous generations of NVIDIA also (with planned obsolescence).

With Unreal Engine 4 being so close to NVIDIA and adopting Gameworks, I'm really worried.

PS: TBH I'm more affraid of what will happen with the GPU market than what will happen with the API wars.

Respect gameworks, i test bombshell and this title have gameworks for destruction objects

View video on youtube.com

However this situation could be more common because nvidia have more money than amd (with this them can could make many things: delay titles, add gameworks for more titles, maybe can delay vulkan launch like happen today and many other things)

Anyway, as far as I remember Leszek left the whole porting business after starting to work on Darksiders port for Nordic Games (Source. He did not leave gaming industry, but does not work on porting games to Linux.
Fact that Leszek does not work on Vanishing of Ethan Carter anymore makes it less possible that we receive port of this game.

Right, but still, Flying Hog does Hard Reset Redux and Shadow Warrior 2 so maybe with him being there we'll have more chances to get those :)

Quoting: MGOid- I'm playing Grid Autosport and really appreciate Feral position related to non Nvidia users: "officially we don't support, by you can play anyway". Hope they fix the split-screen thought.

Thanks we do spend a lot of time on trying to support all 3 vendors were possible.

Split screen is a bug in Mesa from our initial research, once it's fixed in the drivers the game will start to work. Mesa drivers are developing quickly but they do have missing features and bugs and some of them you can't workaround and just need to wait for a fix.

However if we can find a way to work round the issue for mesa then we will.

Quoting: MGOid-And supporting all gamepads, not only the 360 one.

We support pretty much any pad that has SDL support, this is true of all our games not just GRID. So feel free to use any other pads if you want I know we do in development as do other Linux gamers. :)

[EDIT] MGOid admitted in a subsequent post that pad support in GRID does support other pads as he is using an Xbox One pad. I guess MGOid just accidentally left the comment about pad support in the Feral section of his comment by mistake! :)

Hey, thanks for the response. I wish more developers (I'm looking at you Unity) embraced SDL2, controller support in it is great (hotplug during gamelplay FTW!). Glad to learn that split screen is just a driver issue.

And one more time, thanks again for not turn your back to the AMD/Intel customers, like some other porters do. Mesa drivers are the better experience for the AMD owners (and the only one for Intel) and the opensource driver is the future for us, so, glad to know you guys support it, even if it is in a unofficially way.

The Indie Legends 3 Bundle features excellent games, almost all with Linux support
By anth, 1 February 2016 at 3:03 am UTC

Quoting: Mountain ManChances are good these will count as Windows sales.
In some cases this would be a problem but it won't happen here.

When a game has different publishers for the Windows and Linux versions then only one of them is going to get paid for any given sale, and the store selling that game or bundle might have bought the keys from a publisher that wasn't involved with the platform that the consumer is using. If we check Steam for a game ported by Aspyr or Feral we will see that they are listed as the developer and publisher of the port but other companies are listed for the Windows version. For games ported by them it is important to check the publisher when buying from anywhere other than Steam or their own stores.

In this case though if we check on Steam we see that every game in this bundle only has a single developer and publisher. There is no where else that the keys could have come from so we don't need to worry that the wrong company will get paid.

I'd still buy using a browser running within Linux because I'm sure that Bundle Stars like all other e-commerce sites keeps stats on things like that, and I'd redeem them on Linux fairly quickly because Steamworks provides quite a bit of data to publishers. I sometimes find the amount of information being kept about consumers troubling, but when it comes to what platform I buy games for I want this widely known.

Quoting: PublicNuisanceSad news. I've been putting off playing my copy hoping for a Linux version. You win some you lose some.

I'm glad you're up front that you've already bought it.

It really doesn't help that quite a few folk on Steam forums come out with "do a Linux port, then I'll buy it", when there's a pretty obvious icon next to their name that highlights the fact that they've already bought it. It happens in a lot of the "Please give us a Linux version" threads I'm subscribed to.

Some devs might do a Linux version out the kindness of their heart, but most studios will want to see some kind of return on effort. So a thread with 200 pleas to make a Linux version will lose a lot of credibility when 50%+ of those posts have already bought it.

In my defense I didn't have a dedicated Linux system at the time I bought it. I have been buying strictly Linux games for about 6 months now. I don't like to dual boot due to bad experiences in the past so I finally took the plunge and switched my main rig over to Linux about 6 months ago. I still add Windows games to my wishlist so I remember which ones I am hoping for but my money goes to the penguin only.

I finished Tomb Raider 2013 back in Jan 2014 under Wine. I wish they would focus on porting games that *don't* work great under Wine, like the new Tomb Raider. :(

That is, IF vulkan is released at GDC. I don't want to be pessimistic or anything, but there has been no release date yet (appart from "before the end of 2015", of course).

From the descriptions of some of the events (see previous article about it), it sounds like Vulkan will be released as well as some games using it, but we shall see.

Both companies are on the shitlist for things like that as far as I'm concerned. Like there were some Hardware Tessellation bits you could enable in games like Tomb Raider, and nvidia cards would slow to a crawl.

Never happen as it's a nv sponsored title so I don't hold out hope for vulkan any time soon.

This reminds me of an antique game I used to play called "Zoo Tycoon" back in 01/02 before I switched to Linux in 03 :-).

Except that was build a zoo park or sea parks.

No, there was no fire at my sea parks and no one died in a fire at a sea parks...

Yeah if you don't get it you haven't watched The IT Crowd

It's an alpha and on Unity so nothing strange - the devs are really responsive and like to think together with people about the issue, right Bossman? :P
Even if it doesn't work in this version of the Alpha, if the game really sparks your interest I would still back them up because you know that they had a correctly working linux version and you can assured that the final version will work fine.
