This years GDC conference will have a very interesting Vulkan & DX12 talk from AMD

Quoting: Guestnvidia will not help with FOSS drivers for Vulkan. Signed firmware is required to load drivers, regardless of rendering api, and nvidia will not release those.

Khronos might provide reference material, and possibly even some debug tools via one of their members (Valve & LunarG for example), but will not provide drivers themselves. Best we can hope for is that Valve release the intel drivers they modified for testing Vulkan.

That's nonsense. NVIDIA is working hard to get their firmware loading support in good shape so it can be upstreamed. The problem is that it's different for Tegra and desktop GPUs.

The Google Pixel C is running nouveau with the signed firmware for example.

Really?! Sweet! I just heard about this game and presumed I'd want it for PS4. That will probably change now.

Want a job? GOG are hiring!
By Maguvas, 12 January 2016 at 4:19 pm UTC

Hi,

I'm here just to report my experience.

Three years ago I sent GOG my CV/resumee for a generic IT Specialist: they honestly answered me currently (at time) open positions are only for Poland guys (I'm italian). Too bad but it could happens.

On the 2014 there was a Linux Tech open position: I applied myself again with a proper cover letter and they answered me that I was too much experienced and qualified for the position they are offering.

So I do not know if they'll continue in supporting Linux but for sure I totally disagree with their hiring policy: if in the future they'll stop supporting Linux for me it'll be just another step in the wrong direction :)

I'be been playing Dust, Elysian Tail, Oniken and Outland... and some time in Blaze Rush.
I also tried Savant Ascend but by now I can't understand the game mechanics... maybe I need more time with it.

Quoting: FredOSo will this be the first CryEngine game released on Linux? I'm a bit lost how Deep Silver ended up publishing this - looks like I missed something there.
Sometime in 2014 Crytek fell on hard financial times and did some restructuring. For a period of time Crytek was unable (or unwilling) to pay employees, including those working at Crytek UK (formerly Free Radical Design). Crytek sold the Homefront IP to Deep Silver and laid off the entire staff of Crytek UK. Said staff became the newly established Dambuster Studios owned by Koch Media (Deep Silver's parent company) and continued to work on the game.

I'm really happy to hear this. The first Homefront game had a lot of potential but was a rather underwhelming experience that was fairly quickly forgotten by the public at large. When this game was first announced I didn't have much interest in it, on account of the aforementioned first game being so underwhelming, but when they showed off the first gameplay footage and detailed how the game would work, I was impressed.

Then the whole Crytek financial situation happened. The studio making this game nearly shut down and it was looking like this would be a cancelled project. Deep Silver stepped in and bought the IP and essentially the entire studio that was making the game, saving the game. Still, even with Deep Silver's recent Linux-friendly attitude, I was worried about the status of the Linux version of this game, given how close the game came to not existing at all.

Seeing this response makes me quite happy. Assuming the game gets a good reception, I'll happily pick this up on launch or shortly thereafter (depending on when reviews appear) at full price.

And co-op too?
Every game gets better with coop (if you add a good buddy to the mix). So now it only needs to be a mediocre single player game and still be worth it :)

The story as presented doesn't seem to have much personality, but the gameplay looks like it has potential. At any rate it's also good to get higher profile games on the platform :)

Very nice! This will be a Day 1 purchase for me.

I also agree with the above comments, the first game was not that great and it could certainly have been a few hours longer but all the same it was not a bad shooter. The game-mechanics worked well, can't recall any bugs, the story was reasonably entertaining and the environments were atmospheric.

A "promise" back then means nothing until it's actually released.

Right, in that regard you cannot trust anyone promising anything. :D

I tried to find the original test video footage of Vulkan where I heard them mention the software drivers. but it was from early 2014 and seems impossible to find now. But from more recent videos/documents it would seem like it's referred to as just APIs and binaries.
Nevertheless, Nvidia has already been adding some vulkan libs into their latest drivers. it's going to be awesome to see this come to fruition.

I played this at EGX. Apart from my total inability to do shooting games with a controller it seemed a lot of fun: multiple ways to achieve objectives and a mix of shooting and stealth.

Quoting: GuestI expect NVIDIA to help with the open source NVIDIA driver for Vulkan support, since supporting Vulkan in drivers is supposed to be pretty trivial, much more-so than with OpenGL.

Well, this would require them to release their signed firmwares, which I don't think will happen anytime soon.

The rendering API has aboslutely nothing to do with NVIDIAs signed firmwares.

Quoting: omer666As for the GeForce 600 requirement, I agree it's quite unpleasing. Even if my GPU is a 660, I don't think this is safe politics.

This is mostly related to available hardware, it's just not feasible to try and purchase a decade of discontinued hardware (if you can find them) and test a decades worth of cards and CPUs.

It will likely play just fine on many older cards however due to the fact hardware is no longer manufactured and we cannot feasibly test against all those card variations (it would be more work than all our ports so far combined). Our min specifications are the minimum specifications we officially support and have tested ourselves based on the minimum specification hardware series when we started bring games to Linux.

Quoting: wojtek88Am I missing something or port of the game from 2006 released 10 years later will require GPU released in 2012 or later?
I understand that while porting classic games it's not required to have the requirements of the original game and the target of the port is Steam machine, so mostly the one with NVidia 800+ series, but NVidia 600+ series as a requirement of this port makes me not even considering this game. Mainly because my hardware from 2012 that costed > 1k dollars won't be capable to handle this port..

Nvidia 600 series is now four years old, which in GPU terms is pretty damn outdated now. That's not the actual reason though, just pointing it out.

The reason is Feral probably don't have any 5 series or below to test on, so it's a minimum tested basically. They have said this a few times before on here and reddit.
