F1 2015, another big game showing hints of coming to Linux & SteamOS

Haven't enjoyed an F1 sim since I played the crap out of Microprose's F1GP 2 in the late nineties.

Unfortunately, game is not optimized for Windows. So, we can expect even more problem and bad optimization on Steam OS.

Good news, I stopped buying the F1 games, and many others when switched to Linux.
Quoting: Segata SanshiroThe career mode was always pretty good in these games.
But is a shame that F1 2015 don't have a career mode like the previous F1 games.

As some comments have said before, DIRT Rally would be great.

I wasn't a racing sim guru for sure, but I can imagine a lot of linux folks higher up in the ranks would be into this kind of game.

It's nice to have the selection, definitely worth a look but not 4 me i think.

Cool. As with Batman, hopefully by the time we get it on Linux the game is in a much better state than it was at release on Windows and the weeks after that.

More importantly, let me join everybody else in here saying please port Dirt Rally. Pretty please with a cherry on top.

If Codemasters porting this game, I see no reason why they wouldn't do Dirt Rally as well.
I really hope so. With buying Grid Autosport my gaming budget for the next two months is down to zero, but I got Dirt Rally as a gift already, so if there will be a port I would really be happy about that.

Quoting: ProfessorKaos64Is it better yo go high settings with no/low MSAA/FA/AA etc... Or drop to medium with that smoothing?

I tend to use custom settings to get the best performance. Some things can be on high like "anisotropic filtering" and have very little performance impact, whereas setting something like "shadows" or "anti-aliasing" to high can severely drop performance. Tweak it to find the sweet spot or look for an online guide. Just keep in mind that performance is going to be quite a bit lower than what those guides report on Windows, so you'll still need to tweak it to your comfort zone.

Of course! Everyone should support ideas because they don't like them! How could I have been so blind?

Quoting: AnxiousInfusionDo you mean racing games as in professional sport racing or all genres including kart racing games? I could totally understand not holding interest in pro racing as it parallels other sports genres ( I don't like sports games in general).

Pretty much all & every kind of racing game. I guess for me racing is something like a "side-dish", it goes great together with the many "main courses" of other game-genrés but by itself it always leaves me wanting to step out of the game-vehicle and pursue some other activity. ;)

Garry Newman, developer of Rust & Garry's Mod on supporting Linux, possibly not for future games
By pr4vus, 11 December 2015 at 5:39 pm UTC

loved gmod, it's super fun to just mess around in. Rust has a deep meta game, and is quite well done, even though the performance side has been shit lately the linux version runs quite well.

I just hope that Garry finds that Linux will be worth supporting, else we won't support facepunch in the future.

Total War: Attila Invades Its Way Onto Linux
By Mountain Man, 11 December 2015 at 5:28 pm UTC

Quoting: lvlarkApparently it doesn't perform much better under Windows, so it's probably going to get performance patches. How much those will affect the Linux version remains to be seen.
The Total War games have always been performance pigs going all the way back to the original. This is not surprising.

Quoting: BTREBattles can be autoresolved if you're ever bored...
I refer to this as the "auto-lose" feature. I've had instances in Empire where the odds were clearly stacked in my favor, but the computer still managed to hand me a loss when I auto-resolved the battle. Do that once or twice and you quickly learn your lesson: never auto-resolve battles.

By Mountain Man, 11 December 2015 at 5:22 pm UTC

Quoting: Segata SanshiroHow would you say the transition is from something like EU4 or Civ to the total war series? Looking to broaden my horizons :D
I've only played Empire: Total War, but it's basically two games in one. There's the turn-based world map where you manage your empire, then there's the battles which play out in real-time and have you commanding an army of hundreds of soldiers, but they're split up into smaller battalions that you control as a group to make it manageable.

The turn-based portion of the game is fun but nowhere near as in-depth as EU4 or Civ5, but the real-time battles are awesome, and you have to pay close attention to types of troops, positioning, battle stances, and so on. No other game really offers anything comparable.

Nice with another big title on the way.

Now, if only I enjoyed racing-games everything would be great. I suppose it might be a bit odd... I do enjoy driving cars in games and I do enjoy participating in car-races in games...but I still don't really care for racing games. :P

A KDE developer has thoughts on changing how Linux games work
By Keyrock, 11 December 2015 at 5:04 pm UTC

It's an interesting idea and I'm not going to dismiss it entirely, but, as echoed by so many people here, it creates a whole host of issues. Those issues would have to be solved or worked around before implementing anything like a separate wayland session for gaming.

allthough it's doesn't run yet, but still....hope!

Quoting: HunterZIf you just disable compositing, games run great in Linux. The only problem is lack of resolution switching support, which kills me in games like FTL and Gemini Rue. I've become too familiar with using xrandr! It would be better if games or Linux could just do a bilinear scale to my native resolution though, which is what the monitor ends up doing anyway.

Martin explained, that Wayland compositors work differently, and you can't disable compositing like with X.
