Oh, that's something Deck users are going to like.
I don't think Steam Deck supports it? If I understand correctly, it uses ext4.
I do wonder if Valve is considering converting the file system to Btrfs or even ZFS, though. Copy-on-write plus compression might be beneficial on the Steam Deck (at least Btrfs will not use compression on a noncompressable file by default)
ZFS does not use compression on incompressible files either.

It would be awesome if they switched to ZFS, although ZFS does not support the reflinks that Valve likely meant by copy on write:

That said, the prefixes already used symlinks, which give similar space savings.

Both btrfs and XFS support them. It is a shame that they used ext4 instead of XFS on the steam deck.

Vulkan Beta Driver 515.49.10 out now for Linux

This works very well with a build of DXVK master. "Fixed issue with optimized graphics pipeline library final link using the wrong shaders" sounds like a fix for DXVK.

Steam Deck gets a quieter fan again, and louder volume in the latest updates

Quoting: Guestanyone knows if this module will work with Legacy GPUs??
The README says Turing and newer only:

NVIDIA releases open source Linux GPU kernel modules, Beta Driver 515.43.04 out

Quoting: ShmerlWow, that's a big deal. Nouveau will get reclocking, after forever being stuck without it!

Congrats to all Linux users!
Probably only for Turing and Ampere since this driver does not support older GPUs.

I would like to see nouveau’s userland code modified to support this driver. If a vulkan implementation could be added on top of that, it would give us an entirely open source stack for graphics.

Canonical going 'all in' on gaming for Ubuntu, new Steam Snap package in testing
29 Apr 2022 at 6:55 pm UTC Likes: 1

Quoting: damarrinI'd be happier with snaps if at least they started faster. 10 secs for FF from an NVMe drive, 40 seconds from a spinning drive in a recent Ubunt is a joke.
The downside of duplicating shared libraries is that it does not take advantage of the system page cache (or ARC for ZFS), so load times are higher. :/

I'm just trying to picture the reaction of Linux users fifteen years ago if you told them this was a quote from fifteen years in the future. For that matter, you could probably make that five years ago / five years in the future.
As someone from nearly 15 years ago, I am happy to tell you that my response would have been: It’s a trap. :P

AMD Ryzen 7 5800X3D releases April 20, more Zen processors on the way
15 Mar 2022 at 11:05 pm UTC

Quoting: aufkrawallYou can probably save a few bucks by feeding the 5800X3D cheap RAM. But if you can afford a >400€$ CPU, you likely can also buy decent enough RAM. Target audience seems to be owners of Zen 1 or 2 CPUs. Otherwise it does not occur to me why you would want to buy this CPU now with Zen 4 around the corner.
If the infinity fabric interconnect between the Zen 4 cores and the Zen 3 IO die is compatible, it would in theory be possible to pair Zen 4 with a Zen 3 IO die to give us Zen 4 on AM4. Hopefully, AMD does that rather than forcing us to upgrade to DDR5. DDR5 is expensive and it really is only needed if you have an integrated GPU.
