Linux Gaming DRM Free promises: Do they stack up?
26 Apr 2013 at 10:33 pm UTC

Quoting: HamishAs someone who has willingly opted out of using Steam, I am surprised to be the first one to mention that it is only games using Steamworks that are tied to the Steam client, which Project: Eternity has already confirmed to use with regards to its Steam version. So if you see a game with achievements support, steamplay, and other such miscellania, it is going to be tied to the Steam client. If it does not boast these features, the game itself is probably DRM free.
Not exactly, you can both use steamworks and still not have DRM. See: Dungeons of Dredmor.

Quoting: liamdaweActually the difference here is that gog.com's downloaders once downloaded will still work (you could backup your collection).

If Steam went down you don't have that choice since your game downloads are tied directly to their client?
Not exactly sure what you're saying here? If steam went down you'd still be able to play any games which the devs didn't put drm into.
I don't know about you but I don't have every game I own on Steam downloaded, what would happen if it went down - I wouldn't be able to download my games and play them.

It's a risk we all take and it is a risk.
Right, which is no different from GOG, which is the point I was trying to make.

(and yes actually, I do have all of my steam games downloaded :p)

"the Steam platform was designed as method of DRM"

Not really, the only "DRM" that steam forces is that the game must be downloaded using the steam client. Meaning all steam can do is cancel your ability to download the game. Exactly like GOG.

Any DRM above and beyond this is completely up to the Developers/Publishers of the game.

The Humble Weekly Sale
20 Mar 2013 at 12:36 pm UTC

Quoting: Alex V.SharpTo be honest, I think this is a bad idea. At the end of the day someone will end up shafted - prolly the gamedevs. Who knows: Maybe they actually agreed to this. In that case we shall see what happens...
... of course they agreed with it? It's not like HiB just decided to randomly start doing a weekly game sale of stuff they're not allowed to sell.

Skullgirls For Linux Confirmed
15 Mar 2013 at 12:38 pm UTC

Well, the funding campaign is for quite a few things (including the DLC) but most importantly it's to help with the PC release (and now Linux), At the $30 backer level you get a steam code for the PC release, as well as access to the PC beta. Someone should find out if there will be a Linux beta, as well as if the Linux version is actually going to be native. I remember them talking about a possible cider mac port.

Steams February stats are out, Linux rises again to over 2%

Quoting: ganooKeep in mind that many people just used virtual machines to get tux in tf2
next month the numbers might be lower
Quoting: AnonI'd expect it to fall slightly next month, but it'll probably still be above 1.5%
I hope they put in a Linux tab at that point, so we can see more detailed info.
That's not how it works. You're only counted for this if you're asked to participate in the survey. So unless they ran a Linux VM to get a tux and then accepted and took the survey in said VM... it shouldn't drop at all.

DOTA2 looks to be coming to Linux!

Quoting: GuestAlso you can add games in Wine to the Steam Linux Client
Except that it's a steam game... and you can't run wine steam and Linux steam at the same time so... there would be absolutely no point to that.

Steam can be legally packaged in any distro

PoL is Play on Linux, a wine frontend.

@Kurremkarmerruk

The native steam client is just that... native. Has nothing to do with wine.
