KDE's 2024 fundraiser hits the goal - clearly their donation pop-up works

The adopt an app is what did it for me. EBook readers are in my primary scope, so I threw my money into that. I'm glad they made their goal.

Chill out with 'Kind Words 2 (lofi city pop)' when it launches on October 7

I continue to play Kind Words long after it came out (usually once or so a week). It will be interesting to see how they do things with KW2 but I really hope they don't lose the vibe of the original with all the new content. Looking forward to checking it out.

I've been playing Infinode for years, it has been my go to tower defense game for this and the previous version. It will be great to throw it up on the big screen now.

Popular multiplayer code editor Zed gets a Linux release

Quoting: TheSHEEEP
Quoting: dmoonfireAnd, of course, the network-based services are going to be paid-for:
How could they not be paid-for?
They certainly cause network traffic.
As opposed to being self-hosted network services first and happen to have an instance for those who don't want to manage a hosted ve4aion themselves.

There are a number of projects that do that, proved the basic tool as open source but then hardcode/firmly suggest a private, commercial service. Like dolt (OSS) and dolthub (closed). Or VS Code making the C# plugin closed.

I'm fine with projects making money, but I'd rather it be entirely on the side instead of using the OSS project intended to drive the non OSS commercial service.

Zed's EULA suggests to me which is why I'm not comfortable with it.

Popular multiplayer code editor Zed gets a Linux release

I fell in love with Atom and wrote a few novels with it, plus contributed a decent amount of code. When Microsoft canned it, it was heartbreaking because all my work was basically just canned. Zed looks interesting, but I'm also concerned about their EULA (https://zed.dev/eula) because it implies that they are going the route of some products by having a community edition and a closed-source version, which usually means the community edition gets less features over time and they push the private one more.

Zed makes certain versions of the Editor and related software available at the Zed GitHub Repository: https://github.com/zed-industries/zed [External Link] (the “Repo”). Your use of such software is subject to the open source software licenses declared in the Repo.
And, of course, the network-based services are going to be paid-for:

If you have elected to use the Network Based Service by enabling or activating the Network Based Service, Zed will use commercially reasonable efforts to make the Network Based Service available to You as set forth in this Agreement. Once you elected to use the Network Based Service, You may access and use the Network Based Service during the Term, subject to Your compliance with the terms and conditions of the Agreement,
So, as much as I really want to get into it, to find something that isn't VS Code and can fill the Atom-sized hole in my life, I keep bouncing off those concerns. I'm hoping Eclipse Theia (https://theia-ide.org/) has a chance but I'm just waiting at this point (mainly because I've tried to write a few editors myself and failed).

Puppygames bring massive-scale asynchronous PvP battle simulator Battledroid to Kickstarter

I love Puppygames but "persistent" worlds end up being a no go for me, mostly because I play games so infrequently but also because the power levels increase to the point that a newb like me doesn't have a chance without serious grinding.

Love the look though but I love the look of voxels in general. I'll look forward to seeing more trailers just to admire them.

Valheim devs clarify stance on modding including a clear no to paid mods
30 May 2023 at 8:14 pm UTC

As someone who really embraces Creative Commons BY-NC-SA for their own works, I think it's a great idea. Massive mods are a work of love, and I'd hate to have someone spend thousands of hours working on something with hopes that they could get a little money back only to find out they can only use donations would be horrible. But going into it, knowing that they could only ask for donations, that's reasonable.

Free Minecraft-like game MineClone2 v0.82.0 for Minetest out now
30 Jan 2023 at 5:41 pm UTC Likes: 2

Me and the kids (Child.0 is 12, Child.1 is 8) have been enjoying almost nightly sessions with MineTest. Default, not MineClone, though, but it has been a lot of fun just building and working, plus it was so easy to create a shared server with NixOS.

Probably one of the nicest bits is that the clients will download the assets required by the server, so I don't have to worry about making sure they have everything in since (unlike say, Satisfactory).

Wilderness survival sandbox Vintage Story has a massive upgrade out now

I also recall that the developer said you only had to log in the first time, then you could play the game disconnected. I don't remember having to log in again after the first time but even if it is, my Steam games log far more activity and I'm willing to accept that.

For a small development, it is an impressive game and very enjoyable, though difficult since it took me forever to figure out how to make coal properly.
