The Valve Steam Deck, lots of excitement and plenty to think about for Linux gaming
16 Jul 2021 at 9:55 am UTC Likes: 8

i will definitely buy one not only because it is a nifty device but in the hope it will further gaming possibilities in Linux. Valve is a company after all and money speaks for itself there.

If the product succeeds it most likely will be a major boon to gaming on Linux and me buying one is maybe a minor way to ensure that it does.

One thing that makes me wonder though with Valve pushing proton so hard to the devs: Does that mean that Valve will put more and more work into fixes for proton (maybe even as a service to the devs? which sounds kinda crazy to think about)

Bytten Studio say not to sleep on Linux in their postmortem for Lenna's Inception

Glad to hear that from Bytten Studio. Too bad it wasn't a commercial success because it's really well done! I really loved the game, bought it in the itch bundle and then again on steam because i enjoyed it a lot. Can only recommend it - the first "Zelda" game i ever enjoyed :P

Wine 5.10 out with more WineD3D Vulkan work and anti-cheat improvements

I mean stuff like Vanguard and DAC are kernel-level and would basically "take full control over the system" or be in the position to do so, if I'm not mistaken.
Would they also work that way under wine?...
Wine runs the "kernel" as a userspace process, so no - it would not give them full control of your Linux box. They do have "full control" of anything running in Wine (provided that Wine has implemented the calls they're using).
Thanks for clearing that up :) , i wasn't fully aware that it actually IS somewhat of a different layer. As long as it's separated this way, I'm okay.

Anti-cheat improvements...
While I would love for those games to run, it makes me also wonder how well those anti-cheats will work?

I mean stuff like Vanguard and DAC are kernel-level and would basically "take full control over the system" or be in the position to do so, if I'm not mistaken.
Would they also work that way under wine?... I mean, if wine was a seperate VM, it'd be fine for them to take full control over the VM, but since it isn't it makes me wonder/suspicious...

Please correct me if I'm wrong, obviously

Editorial - Linux Gaming's Ticking Clock
28 May 2020 at 11:15 pm UTC Likes: 2

Wasn't sure if I was gonna post or not as someone who has come to Linux somewhat recently (now that i think of it, it's almost a year now o.O) after randomly stumbling about how much easier Valve made gaming on this wonderful platform by integrating Proton and realising that most my games actually work.

True is that I always hated Windows for it's lack or privacy and security and I know I'm the minority in that case, as I notice whenever i bring those topics up and get the same redundant/stupid answers like "Well, i got nothing to hide anyway" etc.

One of the main problems I see with the lack of widespread linux adoption is so many companies being locked into windows and microsoft's office suite or other windows-only programs like adobe for instance as well as that the "common person" as in not really tech-savy, often don't know that there ARE alternatives. Maybe they know about MacOs, if at all.

I recently brought my mother over to Linux Mint for her work-related stuff - and thinking about if I hadn't done the switch myself and told her about it, she would still be complaining about how shitty Windows 10 is (aka forced updates during Webinars and all that fun), because she wouldn't know that there was a viable alternative and Desktop Linux in many aspects has become viable for the common user. (as in browsing and light office-like work)

Gaming for me was always what kept me using Windows and I hated that situation (as already stated) and with every blunder MS does, as they seem to not have any QA for their operating system by the looks of past updates, we can get minor adoption with tools like Proton and the likes.

Still. What we need is a big player supporting the platform.

Valve is kinda doing that, which i commend them for but the reason is fairly obvious:

They're afraid of Microsoft trying to take over the gaming market as their marketshare on windows is already that big and this is exactly what we're seeing currently:

MS pushing Game Pass and UWP trying to lock-in the market on their platform.

If Valve doesn't push Linux adoption harder, we might see this end up happening: That gaming will end up (mostly) being bound to windows with games being locked into the windows store itself or maybe steam even being forced to pay some kind of share. (as in MS trying to create a more google playstore like platform)

I really hope I'm reading this whole situation wrong.

As a both Navi10 and Navi14 owner I agree, since I seem to have strong masochistic tendencies.

I have to update my rant from last fall ( https://www.gamingonlinux.com/forum/topic/4128 ) with my most recent findings: It's nearly June now and the shit still hits the fan when you connect two displays.
Guess I'll still be sitting on my RX 580 for a bit longer and wait with the upgrade then...:dizzy:
Enjoy the fun in full detail

As said: If you've only one display everything's fine. A stock Ubuntu 20.04 was rock stable with my 5500XT. Then I made the mistake and attached two displays... (which I have to do, since this is my working environment)
I'm using two displays, as well (One via DP @144hz and one via DVI @60hz) and going back to one isn't a solution i would take for now (not that the upgrade is neccessary right now, I was just playing with the thought lately)

And since i have to admit that I have no experience with these error logs and I'm pretty much at a loss for what's even going on in there, I won't touch it until it's fixed...

I'm still at the stage of being glad about being able to edit my fstab to get a drive to be automatically mounted :S:

Steam Beta adds Vulkan shader processing

So if i get it right, it should reduce shader caching issues right? I'll be testing it for sure now since I have a bit of a problem with that in some games.
