... and yet another bloody weird case of Nvidia versioning.
Just recently they released a new STABLE driver version 450.57. Subversion 57 of the 450 driver.
... And now they continue with a new beta, version 450.56.01?! So like, this is a new driver that's a beta of the version prior to the stable 450.57??
WTF?

Quoting: barottoI check regularly on their site but they won't budge an inch, it's always €1K, take it or leave it :sad:Considering the fact that they struggle with meeting the demands, it's likely going to stay there for a while. I believe it's still several months delivery time.

So yes - the games needs to be tailored for the VR experience. Absolutely. But I dare say that any genre game can work in VR. So in that respect one could replace the other.

Quoting: EhvisWhile that might be true, VR is not a replacement for games. It is a separate thing with separate games. One thing is very clear to me is that there is no way to have both a normal and VR version. One will suffer because of the other.I would say though, that Alyx is a remarkably powerful demonstration that VR games doesn't have to be that different from other games. Yes the "interface" towards the game is different but in regards to content itself, I would say it is a demonstration that VR can be a "replacement" for other games (if I understand you correctly). VR gaming is not restricted to just simple arcade action and concepts revolving around basic physics.

All this cheating puzzles me: What exactly are the benefits from all those efforts? Are there economical benefits to speak of here? Or other benefits I am unaware of, other than winning some random online matches against some random people on the internet?

... So now the stable version jumps from 440.100 to 450.57? The Nvidia version numbers really confuse me. What happened to the ten main version numbers in between?

I got a feeling that those of you who point out that lots of corporate machines are now unused in the wake of Covid might be spot on.
Sounds exceptionally plausible that Covid has something to do with this. So we see slightly more OS diversity as people use the web from home and on mobile.

I really wish GloriousEggroll would join forces with the Valve efforts instead of operating on the side. I try avoiding to do more "custom modifications" to my system than absolutely necessary. It's such a nightmare whenever I do a new fresh install.

If I put a gamer in front of my PC on GTA5 and ask him what OS it runs on, he would not be able to tell. I installed that game in exactly the same way as I would on a Windows machine. And not a soul over at Rockstar even considered Linux as a platform to run their game on. That's what I talk about.
A reality where OS matters much less. We're well on the way there:
Today, as a Linux VR gamer, I purchase games tagged as VR in the Steam store, I don't even pay attention to what OS it is tagged for. It doesn't matter. Thus far they've all run flawlessly.
And this is the status - today.
An extension of this "transparency" is what I believe was LibertyPaulM's dream.

Quoting: GuestSo it's still very much relevant which platform is underneath. It's of technical relevance yes - but to the average end consumer it doesn't matter as long as the games play well on the platform.
Quoting: Liam DaweYou can't realistically see Wine/Proton as a direct target for game developers, the actual target is still Windows and DirectX in that case and they remain closed source.Open or close source is irrelevant. But you too seem to talk about compiling cross platform. That's not what I talk about. I talk about it being less important what platform it is compiled for. Due to the mentioned reasons I think that is a very likely scenario.

Also, as the platforms grow closer and closer together (Apple changing to x86 architecture, Windows implementing Ubuntu in their environment, cross platform tools emerging, implementation and a better attitude towards open standards, etc), I'd argue that all pointers indicate that indeed LibertyPaulM's dream is pretty damn well on the way!

Quoting: Liam DaweReally? I think proton is quite the demonstration of the opposite?Quoting: GuestFrankly my dream is that ultimately one day the OS you run will become irrelevant and then the "native gaming" nonsense goes away for good. That's realistically not something we're going to see in any of our lifetimes.
