Why Are We Still Dual Booting?
12 Mar 2015 at 6:47 pm UTC

First of all I'm not really dual boot anymore since VGA passthrough become super easy. Though I'm use Windows only for gaming and very rare testing of software I'm developing.

- Do you see yourself first as a gamer, then as a Linux user?
More like Linux user as I'm can clearly live without games for a while, but don't see any chance to use anything except Linux for work and life. Anyway I'm not average gamer as I only playing limited time while all my life related to games and hope in future my work will be related to games too.
- Are the 1000+ games on Steam and hundreds more on other sites still not enough for you to be a 100% Linux gamer?
Personally I choose what works better and suitable for me the most. I'm not going to waste my time on Wine, anything that don't support open source drivers or just have a lot worse performance.

Though I'm not likely going to play certain kind of games on Windows in case I may want play them during other activity; for example Civ5. On other side there is other games that take hours of time without a pause and in this case I'm fine to play them in Windows.
- If you feel so passionately about Linux that you’ll take questionable actions to defend it, then why not do the most simple thing and stop gaming on Windows?
I don't do that because I don't believe it's going to change anything. I think more correct way to support something it's spend money on it. For example I don't support evil DRM practices so I'm not going to buy Age of Wonders III no matter if it's available on Linux or not.

So only way to support Linux gaming it's give money to developers who already supported it. And other developers who don't support it or don't do that properly shouldn't get any attention.

Nvidia PhysX Source Code Now Available Free On GitHub

Quoting: ElectricPrismIf I could have bought a high-end R9 990X card from AMD I would have if they opened the driver like they plan to - but hey I can't make my buying choice based on "promises".

Too bad AMD didn't hurry up, they could have taken my $400. My girls rig will need a new GPU soon so hopefully by that time AMD releases their source.
AMD can't "hurry up" because any code they push to public require IP review which is slow process. Releasing of open source drivers is a lot harder than releasing proprietary things as there is tons of trolls around who's only waiting to get a chance to sue company like AMD for whatever reason.

Quoting: r2rXYou're just about right. Both the PS3 and PS4 are based of modified versions of FreeBSD.
As PS4 not yet hacked I have no idea about it, but PS3 have far more things from NetBSD rather than FreeBSD. Though it's not like real OS as there is very few libraries available and it's not use things like X server, audio servers, etc.

Quoting: r2rXThe PS4 features two graphics APIs; a low-level API called GNM and a high level API called GNMX. (Sony also uses their own PlayStation Shader Language (PSSL), specifically introduced with the PS4).
It's also have OpenGL ES 2 support: https://www.khronos.org/conformance/adopters/conformant-products#opengles [External Link]
Though very likely that it's implemented on top of other API.

Quoting: r2rXThe PS3 uses PSGL (which is a mix of OpenGL ES and NVIDIA's CG).
Nope. Just like PS4 it's mainly used is proprietary api called GCM and PSGL is implemented on top of it. Of course PSGL is extremely crippled (OpenGL ES 1.0) and was never used for anything except few casual games.

Quoting: GuestJust find Alex Deucher's speech about it, he does mention while they have working prototype code for amdgpu with Sea Islands, they aren't sure if that will hit upstream, and they would prefer not to have two open source drivers for the same hardware. So it's likely to be 3xx and beyond hardware only.
Everything is even more simple. Linux upstream standards/rules doesn't allow multiple drivers for one device so Linus just not going to merge it. Also you're a bit incorrect about 3xx because R9 285 (Volcanic Islands) don't supported by Radeon so it's will be first graphics card using AMDGPU.

Though that's all have nothing do with Mesa because userspace driver for R9 285 and 3XX likely will remain RadeonSI.

Planetary Annihilation Teases New Units & Saved Game Support

Quoting: Purple Library GuySo, wait, this colossus of a game that everyone's been raving about is something where you can't save?!
Developers wanted to implement very innovational saving system so it's just takes time because it's hard to implement.
There is other things they may fix faster (especially Linux UI issues) or add earlier, but save system isn't one of them.

Quoting: Bumadaradd the good story mode please, don't care about the rest
Not going to happen. Developers don't really have team that can produce scripted campaigns, CGs with audio and don't have budget for that. Campaigns is really expensive thing to do...

CaesarIA Now On Steam, A Re-make Of Caesar III, But It Might Not Be Legal
22 Jan 2015 at 9:15 am UTC

Quoting: abelthorneI don't think Valve would accept engines only that need files to be installed manually on Steam, that may be why the devs decided to release it that way and put the disclaimer.
This project does have own assets and there is only few files from original game packed as far as I understand: some maps and one music track (removed already as far as I get). I don't think developers intentionally wanted to break copyright there, but likely just wanted to put it on Steam as fast as they can and forgot about few things.

This does happen with guys who live in countries where nobody care about copyright. It's not to say it's normal, but give them some time and issue likely will be solved.

As far as I see music that was mentioned as part of original game assets was already removed, but maps not yet.

There is also issue with Steamworks SDK that really break GPL (posted topic about that [External Link]), but still I think developer did that unintentionally and will fix it. After all it's just his hobby and he may make some mistakes because of that.

Planetary Annihilation Major Update, Unit Cannon Makes An Appearance

Anyway I if you find out let me know why it's happen because I'm able to pass problem to developers if it's exists. Though for me it's worked great on Intel and latest version is working fine too.

Though due to UI issues I'm always use "--software-ui".

This is pretty weird. Game should work fine with FOSS drivers.
If you want to check why it's happen please sent me friend request on Steam. :-)
