Ubuntu 26.04 ('Resolute Raccoon') LTS is out now

Quoting: KimyrielleNot sure how I feel about the forced switch to Wayland. I know, I know! It's the future. But I am still not 100% convinced it's fully ready to take over yet.

Oh, well, I won't have to deal with it until December anyway - which is when this release will make it into Mint 23.
Wayland is a DE thing, so this doesn't mean anything for Mint. Since they're a lot more conservative with changes, they'll probably take a year or two to release Cinnamon with Wayland and then keep X11 for a while too.

KDE Plasma 6.7 gets per-screen virtual desktops and Wayland session management

Quoting: chrNice. I'm still dreaming about using different desktop backgrounds for each virtual desktop (which I was reminded of when hearing about this virtual desktop update).
Can do that easily in Xfce. It's what I do to remember which workspace I am on, as there is no way to display numbers on screen, like there is in KDE and Cinnamon. Can only show numbers if you have workspace displaying on your panel and rename them from there in Xfce. I will have to try out KDE in VMware and see how Wayland behaves itself now, as all I keep hearing is how good Wayland is, but do people actually use their computers, other than playing games and watching YouTube? Do they make spreadsheets, create stuff, open as many tabs as possible, push their systems to the limit, by having Steam games open whilst rendering or editing video, watching YouTube, browsing the web all at the same time, whilst using Wayland?

I'm just curious that's all, as that is how I spend my time in Xfce. If I feel happy enough with KDE Wayland in a virtual environment I will install it onto real hardware and see how it performs in the real world. I've been on the fence with Wayland, as heard nothing but good things, then the horror stories of it not liking OBS-Studio and other app installs.
Every time I tried Wayland session with either KDE or Gnome, they kept crashing. Though that was some time ago, so does anyone here use their Wayland Linux like I do in X11? Is Wayland really that good now that it does not crash when put under load?
Wayland has been the default for KDE for a while now and most people don't switch back, so it's safe to say that it largely works now. I have have used it even before that and it works like a charm.

CachyOS update brings improvements for PC gaming handhelds, the installer and more

Adding an easy way to install Winboat is a great idea. I use it and it works very well, aside from some papercuts. Sadly, one usecase which I have does not work (proprietary VPN client).

KDE Plasma 6.6 released with improved accessibility, new on-screen keyboard and lots more

Quoting: Purple Library GuyBut it doesn't seem to be available in any distros as user friendly as Mint. One of these days I'll give it another look.
Fedora KDE is user friendly. Not having Nvidia drivers pre-installed ≠ not-user friendly. Windows comes without drivers pre-installed as well and people think that OS is user friendly. There's no harm in websearching "install nvidia drivers fedora Linux" and learning a thing or two about package management in the process. It's good practice long term.
In theory I agree, but installing Nvidia drivers on Fedora (especially with secure boot) is poorly documented and a pain in the ass.

Discord is about to require age verification for everyone

Quoting: BrandonGeneI hope this reverses the trend of open source devs using Discord as their development hangout places. A support forum is one thing (though still way worse than a real forum for documentation), but the actual development happening via Discord is terrible. "Think you've found a bug? Come tell us on Discord before opening a issue here!" - nope.
Yeah I think that's a horrible idea too. You shoot yourself in the foot, bevause whereas a forum will slowly grow to contain public internet searchable answers, Discord cannot be indexed at all (or even searched well at all tbh)

Linux Mint 22.3 gets a Beta release with lots of new features

Always good to see Linux Mint chugging along. I was just thinking though, does anybody know how far along the folks at Linux Mint are with the Wayland migration?

KDE Plasma going all-in on Wayland and will drop the X11 session completely

Quoting: LoftyThere still isn't an onscreen keyboard that rivals 'Onboard' or anything close under KDE / Wayland. In fact, im not sure there even is a fully functioning onscreen keyboard under Wayland KDE-Plasma right now

the last i read about it was here (last post 6 days ago):

https://discuss.kde.org/t/plasma-6-and-wayland-no-on-screen-keyboard-working/17799/53 [External Link]

where the workaround requiring GDK_BACKEND=x11 & adding it to environment variables. Seemingly not working on Fedora. Look at the first post in that thread and see who the kinds of people are effected by the forced switch to Wayland. People are still struggling with this all the way back to the beginning of Wayland's inception. Sure there are workarounds to some extent but it's not a very user friendly solution, when you are telling regular folks to switch to Linux.

I guess valve might use xwayland on SteamOS for the onscreen keyboard ? will that cover every feature of a regular keyboard idk.
Not yet, but ghey're working hard on it: see https://community.kde.org/Plasma/Wayland_Known_Significant_Issues [External Link] at Accessibility.

Fedora proposal put forward to improve "production stability and incident management"

I'm kind off dissapointed in the discourse here tbh (like with a lot of Fedora stuff among other things). Black and white thinking and bad faith takes are more common on GoL comment sections nowadays, which unfortunately makes the whole place less welcoming imo.

Personally, I think people are being quite harsh and unconstructive when they write of the distro after this decision, especially when they are still in the process of finding a solution. Critisizing them for making a SIG is really confusing to me, why would it be a bad thing to bring a attention to it?

We're talking about FOSS software here, most people are doing this work in their free time and nobody's perfect, and I can imagine that people get frustrated. If we look at the forum discussion, the moderator was trying to move the discussion back to something constructive. That's not the same as "toxic positivity" imo.

I have been using Fedora for years now, and it is generally quite stable, I think they're doing a pretty good job, especially considering they're at the leading edge of package versions.

Fedora Linux 43 has officially arrived

I agree with ssj17vegata on the AI thing. It is an interesting reason to switch distro because of the reasons mentioned. Another reason is that this is about how contributers choose to program the code: it has zero impact on your user experience, it is not like they are inclusing an LLM in the distro itself. Besides that, I personally find LLMs very usefull and I see many developers around me who can leverage it effectively to make quality code faster/more easily. Not everyone uses it to vibe code you know. People are very black and white on AI, especially in the FOSS space, but it has it's advantages too.
