I read the comments pretty often, and I cannot remember the last time I saw anything toxic. I am not against moderation as such, but is there really a problem that needs solving?

I still fondly remember the days when you didn't even have to login to comment.

Dying Light & Dead Island Definitive Edition might soon work on Mesa
15 May 2017 at 6:45 am UTC

Quoting: PublicNuisanceAlthough even with AMDGPU Pro drivers my RX480 had about 20 FPS on low so not like Mesa could have been much worse.

Wow, that's quite bad. I was planning to get myself an RX580, but with this performance level, even a modest NVIDIA card would beat it.

Is it as bad with all the games? Would it be possible to run something like Mankind Divided on AMD graphics?

Wednesday Madness, a quick look at some good Linux gaming deals
12 April 2017 at 5:58 pm UTC

I got Dirt Rally from Humble Bundle. Was pleasantly surprised about how well optimized it is. You can really turn down the graphics, even to the point of replacing objects with sprites. I managed to run it on my modest Quadro K1100M at 1600x900 on medium settings at 30-35 FPS. Can go up to 60 FPS if I really don't care about the looks.

That's not amazing, I know. But for somebody who never owned a proper gaming machine, this is perfectly playable. In comparison I can only get around 20 FPS from Mankind Divided at 800x600 and all options on lowest.

Airship combat game Guns of Icarus Alliance released as a standalone game

I played a fair amount of Guns of Icarus Online in the early days, and it can be a great game. Although it is very dependent on the community and teamwork. You absolutely have to use voice communication to coordinate your actions. And experienced players will totally hand you your ass on a plate.

I would like to try Alliance, but I am afraid I will not be able to dedicate enough time to actually be any good at it. Which is a problem with such highly cooperative games. That was actually the reason I stopped playing Guns of Icarus Online in the first place...

The developers of 'Ticket to Ride' have abandoned Linux support for their game

Quoting: thelimeydragonUnless I am remembering incorrectly, I thought the game was made in Java? Even if your lazy it's pretty easy to support Linux with a basic Java game.
This is just not cool. I have been doing Java development for years now, and it is literally the most cross-platform environment ever. There are some caveats if you are using native libraries such as for OpenGL, but even that you have to want to make incompatible.

Reminds me of a certain math software I had to use for school. It was a Java application, but it was wrapped in a Windows executable, and some DRM crap to purposely make it incompatible with other platforms. The lengths people sometimes go to make their applications not run on multiple platforms is mind-bogging.

Quoting: ExpalphalogAnd there's one more reason to be jealous of Europe. Lol

We always pay more, sometimes significantly, for computer components and latest technology gadgets here in Europe. That, and they always come later than in the US. So I think you will do just fine. :P

Humble Store has some noteworthy deals on this weekend

I picked up SOMA. Huge fan of Frictional Games, and especially Penumbra series.

Quoting: M@yeulCI'm torn on deus ex... On one hand, I am pretty sure I won't be able to play it with my current setup; but on the other hand, it's a pretty good discount, and I don't know if I'll see another like this before I upgrade it (let's say six months).

It's on sale pretty often, and I am sure it will go even cheaper in the next six months. So no reason to do it now.

I bought it on Steam, because I was curious if I could run it, and unsurprisingly could not. But decided not to refund it, because I wanted to support Feral Interactive.

Quoting: SamsaiThough it's also sometimes possible to have a PC be built for you with the components you desire, some shops offer this as an option and will naturally take a bit of extra on top of component prices but you get to avoid the DIY.

It's been a while since I bought a PC, but most shops would gladly assemble the machine for you. And also advise on the components you may need. Just avoid the shopping center electronics shops. You know the Apple shop types, where they just have laptops and overpriced cables. People there often have no technical skills beyond taking your money. You want a shop that sells PC parts.
