Moreover, realistic games might look awesome, but even if we do not directly realize it, they require a lot of our unconscious brainpower so that we recognize faces, three-dimensionality with depth, motion, outlines and volumes, and after a long exposure to complex scenes we get exhausted by all that stuff. Simplistic, colorful and pixelated graphics, on the other hand, are very easy to recognize and process, so it might have a relaxing effect -- or at least not be so tiresome.

I'd never thought of that, it's interesting. Did you read it somewhere or it's your own conjecture?

It took me a long time before I gave Sunless Sea a proper play, and while it was a little grindy and static, I thoroughly enjoyed the experience overall.

I've put some time into this game and enjoyed it, but ultimately it had enough problems that I gave up on it. When it works it's a fantastic survival/scavenging/loneliness simulator, but there are problems. The UI is really clunky, and the balance is way off; a lot of skills that should be midgame (eg moving towards self-sufficient food production) are impossible without late-game skill levels, so everything slows to a halt while you grind up skills - particularly construction.

ridiculous, you can't just take a generic RPG, replace everything with cats, and expect people to-aww he has his own little den that he curls up in at night! how's that mister, do you like your little den?
