Valve fixes up Steam Remote Play - again

As far as I can see, 2024 is looking like the year where most of the Wayland stuff is done. Wine on Wayland is progressing decently, Google seems to be looking at Wayland too so browsers (and CEF & electron apps) should be getting better, new input module is being tested, display colors, drawing tablet, so many things have basic implementation that should be wrapping up this year or the next.
For this issue specifically, once the full pipe from DE/WM/Compositor to Steam to the Steam game (Linux Native or Wine) is fully Wayland, it should help with the latency and stability. It's really is just Steam that we don't have a timeline for when they may go full Wayland native - but even then we've seen the moves they've made to pay their tech debts and modernize.
2024 I think will be the year where Wayland is mostly done, and 2025 is mostly testing through early birds like Fedora before the likes of RHEL, Ubuntu LTS, and Debian drops x11 as a default fallback.

Quoting: TheSHEEEPWait, so the 5th or so "year of the Wayland" is not actually it? ....For what it's worth, RustDesk is currently working on remote desktop portal compatibility so that they can do Remote Desktop Host even from flatpak on wayland. TeamViewer have support Wayland host for a while now, though it still has issues.
I am shook!

Quoting: tuubiSo I guess by your definition, Atelier is just as "niche".Huh. I guess the anti-woke group do talk about stuff they don't spend money on as much as the other side. Ryza was all over the internet though - in comparison, the most famous person who talks about Trails was Garnt from Trash Taste and Geoff from Mother's Basement.

Quoting: tuubiTrails is relatively niche compared to Tales and even Atelier series, I'd say. It's getting more popular, especially thanks to Cold Steel being an easy entry point, but it doesn't change that it's a 10+ games of continuous story. The only other games I know that's similarly one long unbroken storyline are Ys (which is also the same company) and Rance series (which is even more niche outside of Japan).Quoting: fenglengshunAs usual, Trails fans just show up in random places just to show that they're everywhere and they're dedicated despite 'niche' that game is.Turn based JRPG is a niche? I thought it was still a decently popular genre with lots of fans.

Windowkill is a clever multi-window twin-stick shooter that moves around your screen

Still, interesting to see a game that runs straight into the mess that is window servers on various platforms.

I did also test it on Wayland too with KDE Plasma, and it works fine there too.It is still running on XWayland and I'd imagine it functions just fine there because behind the scene it's still in one canvas or something.

Hm, they said they're looking into Flatpak release in one of theit threads. Looks like it won't be for this year unless there's a surprise release on their mid-year update.
A shame, because Flatpak would solve the issue of the headache inducing dependencies they have (especially for Office 365 which is my main purpose of getting CrossOver)

What to Expect From Wine on Wayland in 2024

Though I do prefer Foxit because it's just much better. I have a Portable version I use in a Windows VM, because even with Wine it's sub-optimal vs just using it in a VM.

Quoting: Purple Library GuyYeah. Although what I really really want is alternatives to Adobe products that work about as well, because I really dislike Adobe. Specifically for fiddling with .pdfs, I have no need for anything more powerful for image stuff than the GIMP and various other already available open source things. For PDFs, I just use MasterPDF Editor 5 on Flatpak for most simple editing stuff, and I use MasterPDF 4 in a container for the more complex stuff. I've looked into Qoopa PDF Studio as well, though that one is paid-only so I haven't really tested much of it.

Quoting: FoxStevenWhat I only want is using Adobe Product on linux......Some of it is already usable, but it's a hack and isn't reliable. We'd likely see Adobe moving to web-based solution to make a single SKU for all their products available in all platforms.

I'm on daily updates, so I don't really have to worry about this. If it hasn't been solved, there's nothing I can do, and if it has then I should automatically get it.
Though, I'd assume Flatpak runtimes will need to update as well? Although the risk should be lower there with all the mitigation they have.
