Valve limits Steam store pages to 2 trailers before screenshots
4 May 2023 at 10:23 am UTC

Quoting: EikeI got the feeling though the autoplay option would switch itself every other week...
Yeah, I'm pretty sure as well. I do disable autoplay by default on my browser, but the problem is that, without disabling autoplay, Steam defaults to showing the trailer even if it doesn't play.

Usually I just can't be arsed to change it again, I only ever change it when I'm doing initial logins after distro-hopping.

I honestly just disable the autoplay and never look at the trailer. Years of various online stores' videos have taught me that most of the time they waste a lot of time and aren't very informative.

They really should just apply TikTok/Shorts video principles to store trailer -- make them short, to the point, and interesting immediately and throughout.

Quoting: pete910Well just tried AV1 via GPU encode on my 6800xt seems to work fine. No option to use AV1 when streaming though.

Having said that do YT/twitch support streaming AV1 ?
How did you do that? RX 6000 series GPU'S do not support AV1 encoding. RDNA 2 is limited to AV1 decoding only as far as i know. Also AV1 encoding is not supported by MESA VAAPI as of now.
Yeah, AFAIK only RDNA3 (RX 7*000s) supports hardware encoding for AV1. RDNA2 / RX 6*000s is decode only. There's been some major support for AV1 recently, though I can't remember if it was for Mesa, vaapi, or ffmpeg. But all those three probably need to be sorted out first before we can use AV1 hardware encoding.

Legitimately, this is why I'm just patiently waiting for any upgrading. By the time that a decent RX 7600 board is cheap enough for me to buy here, most of these stuff should be sorted out enough for public testing.

Seems the big Chinese surge on Steam is over - Steam Survey for April 2023
3 May 2023 at 5:43 am UTC

Quoting: HighballIf you close steam
run this command
sed -i -e '/SurveyDate/ s/"[0-9].*"/"'$(date +%Y-%m-%d -d "1 year ago")'"/' ~/.steam/steam/config/config.vdf

Then reopen steam
You will get a steam survey.

I would prefer the login and playtime data as well. Hit me up Valve; I can make this happen for you.
Yeah, this works -- even though I'm using steam in a container. I wish they could just do it every three months -- at least for Linux users. I think that's a reasonable time between distro-hopping and stuff, so that the Linux distro division remains fresh.

I hope Valve release SteamOS officially for end-user and OEM soon. I don't really care who makes the hardware, I just want them to use SteamOS and Linux by-default.

I was about to ask for Nobara as well, since it's currently the distro in my PC as well. Though, there's also been a lot of new distro making a splash as of late -- Vanilla OS, blendOS, Pika OS, Cachy OS, and others. Do we have a criteria for what distro can be added/requested to be added?

Flathub app store for Linux and Steam Deck gets overhauled
23 Apr 2023 at 7:00 am UTC

Quoting: pentarctagonI think I want the technical description then? What measures are used to determine that "the app is published on Flathub by its original developer or a third party approved by the developer"?
I think it's domain ownership? Similar to how they base the top level domain in their tld.packager.package format name for flatpak apps.

Flathub app store for Linux and Steam Deck gets overhauled

Nice. Still waiting for Native Host Messaging to progress, and I'm really hoping for that portal for usb-control and communicating with other flatpak apps progresses soon. But Flatpak is pretty nice when it works -- and Nix, Distrobox, and Conty covers up the rest.

Legitimately, I've gotten annoyed whenever I need to install packages to my host system nowadays.

Linux and Steam Deck game manager Lutris has a fresh Beta out
20 Apr 2023 at 5:51 pm UTC

Interestingly enough, I recently tested the Lutris' Flatpak runner and it worked... even though I was using Flatpak Lutris. I was able to run flatpak yuzu from flatpak lutris. I don't think that's very compliant to what Flatpak wants, but for migrating to a flatpak-focused install, that helps. I hope that it gets incorporated to a real "use installed Flatpak executable" option for the runners.

I still feel like Lutris is currently repaying a technical debt accrued over the years as it needs to adapt to the new needs of gaming and Linux trends of the past two years. I hope it gets there, but for now, I prefer Heroic for managing Wine games. It's just more straightforward.
