Why The Porting Method Doesn't Matter For Linux Games
28 May 2014 at 4:50 pm UTC

They ported it to mac with eon first, and guess what it's bad too. Check the steam forums.

Same company that did the port for them also ported Spec ops: the line and dead island for mac and I think you can guess how good they are aswell. We prolly gunna see those ports on linux one day too YAY

Can you find a good solid modern game that has been wrapped for linux or mac and been any sort of good??

Also VP is currently working on wrapping Dirt Showdown. Which with recent news that codemasters are bringing Grid auto sport to linux, probably just means it will be another game to avoid.

be very careful before ever buying a linux version of those listed games.

You think they actually thought the game would meet expectations? Who ever made that decision should be fired, at best it should of been put in the beta tab. They have to know it's bad right? Could anyone have tried it and thought, yep this is ready for our fans. lmao

I got 374 games on steam, only 168 of them for linux. 2 of em are wrapped bought by mistake like finding out that The witcher is wrapped 5mins after I already bought it. That means I have bought 206 games that I can no longer play. And a over 100 of em I have never played, thanks to having to get like 5 windows games in a bundle to get 1 linux game. I am happy for all 206 of them to sit and rot if they arn't native. I do miss some of them, but have had plenty of games to keep me busy. Like you say we have loads of games now, we don't need this and shouldn't accept it. We can moan all we wan't to get a wrapped port fixed but hey, it alot of people already handed over their money. If they really are willing to put time/effort/money into fixing these things, they would of just put time/effort/money into porting it properly.

I don't feel I have anything else constructive to say about it now, so I am done with this thread.

With attitudes like this, I hope you all enjoy ya 2nd rate experiences while paying full price. You all deserve what you get. Hope this isn't a clear picture of how most Linux gamers feel otherwise the future won't be fun at all :(

The devs who do this clearly don't give a damn, and will serve you up crap after crap while you all beg for more. This shit has been going on for MAC users for ages now, go look and see if any them seem happy with the wrapped titles after all this time. The real mac gamers are dual booting windows, I only just stopped dual booting bout a year ago. I don't want to do it again in future.

There is a MASSIVE difference between accepting games that use dosbox, and games that use a wrapper.

Without dosbox, no one can play those games any more at all. Everyone gets the same deal for their money. The games are also crazy old and performance is non-issue.

With wrappers tho, windows users are clearly getting a better deal for their money. First class support/optimization ending in clearly a better overall experience. Maybe, just maybe it would be acceptable if they sell it that way for 75% off the windows price, since at best we would get 75% the experience. Wine devs themselves state that you can expect 50% performance in wine.

Stefan Dösinger is one of the CodeWeavers employees largely responsible for the graphics work in Wine.
QUOTE - In general on a dual-core machine running Wine you can expect about 50% performance under Linux with Wine compared to directly running Windows, but it's largely dependent on the actual game and driver. When using the NVIDIA binary Linux driver you can more likely expect around 60% the performance of Windows or if using the open-source Radeon driver there is a 30~40% performance expectation. - QUOTE

Soo should you pay full price for that???????????????????????? really???????????

At least no one has managed to make a wrapper for dx10 or dx11. So newer games ain't gunna get wrapped. :P

EDIT: Don't get sucked in Liam, or your site will end up slideshowgamingonlinux.com

All this does is undermine all we have gained in the last year or so, you really want to go back in time where we winemulate everything again, but just don't have to set the wine bottle up ourselves??

Codemasters Looking At Supporting Linux, GRID Autosport Possible

Hope their next Formula 1 game has Linux support. I own F1 2011 and 2012 but can't play them anymore. Probably my most missed games since I stopped dual booting. At least I can still play GP4 in wine while I wait.

Great game. Reminds me alot of Gauntlet on the c64.
Been having alot of fun with it, can't wait to try out the thief.

The developer has been really good at sorting out any problems us linux players have aswell.
It doesn't require mono dev packages, or even mono at all on your system anymore. Fixed up all the controller problems. I can't wait for them to make more games.

Where Will AMD Take Their Drivers In Future On Linux?

Quoting: GuestJust to drop another comment in here: don't forget about RAM affecting game performance. Slow RAM + fast CPU can be much worse than fast RAM + slow CPU, regardless of core count. It counts doubly with integrated graphics.
I am guessing this was in reply to me with the serious sam 3 example?
fx-8350 has ddr3 1800
i7 has ddr3 1600

but you are right ram does affect game performance. This just makes the fx-8350 look even worse lol

I feel pretty buthurt over having purchased that chip. I watch my partner playing the same games as me with often lower settings and or not as smooth :( at least I made it quiet now for her. They should supply a much bigger fan an heatsink like intel does, so the fan doesn't have to spin at the speed of light when it's under load.
