Quoting: denyasisBesides, wouldn't it just be easier collect the "does it start?" data from Steam users? Send a lot faster and easier.

I'm sure Steam actively monitors quite a bit of our systems. I know it monitors our game directories (if, say you manually add a mod to a game, it won't let you play it until you upload a copy of it to them or remove it), and it does something with the network (I get a sudo request from Network Manager every time I open Steam - NM is superuser only on my laptop). Even in "offline mode" it reaches out over the network.

We know it tracks whether the game is running, play time, etc. I wouldn't be surprised if it tracks some other info to send to Valve.
We know for sure it tracks play times, so yes, useful data!

I wonder how much a basic test could be automated. Like, starting each Steam game, letting the computer find that a window has been created (or something opened fullscreen), colors have changed, a minute later on pressing a key and/or clicking around with mouse and/or controller buttons, colours change again...

Ok, it wouldn't say much about playability, but it would at least sort out games that don't start or don't show anything or crash early and the like.

Quoting: ValveThere are three different ways a game can be added to the queue to be reviewed:
  • You can manually request a review for an upcoming or a back-catalog title by using the "Steam Deck Compatibility Review" link in the Technical Tools sections of your app landing page. (Note: not all partners have access to the review request tool yet. We're increasing the number of partners with access over time.)

  • When a back-catalog title meets certain automated heuristics, it will automatically be added to the review queue with no need for you to submit a manual request. You'll receive a notification when this happens.

  • When Valve identifies a game as important to Steam Deck customers, we may sometimes add games to the review queue with no need for you to submit a manual request. You'll receive a notification when this happens.

"we may sometimes" sounds way less than I expected, to be honest.

Quoting: 14I've been running Wayland on my laptop for a few months now. It works well there, and it has a crisper feel to it. You know what I mean?
I had these moments, when switching from an analog to a digital monitor or from HDD to SSD. (Probably these effects where bigger though.)

Oh wait...
Correct. Do note that everyone you mentioned above are people who know you personally in another context, and as you mentioned "you know your stuff with computers, right?!? [...]" and not "as an expert, [...]". The second clue there is in the ", right?!?".
Sorry, it doesn't work out. I am an expert, and I am asked. A friend of mine once asked if I could fix the startup time of a colleague's computer, so it's not even restricted to people I know. And I'm sure many here have similar experiences. My favorite computer magazine even has articles that start with "... and when you're asked for help again as you're the one who knows their stuff with computers...".

If someone's available, many people ask for computer help.

Quoting: Guest"Normies" don't ask for help when they're uncertain about things? Because that sounds counter-intuitive.
That is actually true.
Your average user, sometimes negatively referred to as "normies", generally don't ask questions from experts for the same reason I don't ask questions from fashion experts on what colours go together.

I don't grab as many games by far, but did get SteamWorld Dig 2. It might be one of the games that are more collected than actually played on my side, though. :)
