A look at the top 100 Steam games and how many will work on Linux and the Steam Deck

Quoting: CatKillerTo make a credible console, you need to be aiming at sales of around 100 million units, and you need everyone to know that you're aiming for that kind of audience for your platform so that everyone buys in. Low sales breaks the entire model. Valve aren't making anything like that many. Nowhere near. You need to sell worldwide to normal people in normal shops. Valve aren't doing that, either.

As a demonstration device for Linux gaming...
I don't think it needs to be one of these two. You'd need to target dozens of millions if your console is competing with the big two, if it's not compatible with anything else and if it wants to fetch exclusive triple A games. None of this is true for Valve. I wouldn't know why they'd need to target so many.

But it can still be viable, without having to be something "special for Linux". As long as they can sell without loss (or maybe compensate little losses for the smallest Steam Deck with the big one(s)), they're fine. More hardware to sell games for, as that's their main business.

Quoting: Purple Library GuyOverall, if it's really a big performance hit, it could be a major issue. Suddenly playing on Linux is clearly faster for many cases . . . and lots of gamers really like fast. Surely the VBS thing could be disabled though?
I bet.

Quoting: Purple Library GuySo does anyone else wonder what's up with Ubuntu 20.04.3 LTS 64 bit? The stat says it's at 15.38% and went up +15.38%. So, like, it just came into existence?
It did, if you take into account all version digits (which they shouldn't):

Quoting: ELMAI've moved to Ubuntu last week after using the windows 11 dev builds for months, and I'm loving everything about ubuntu and linux in general, I haven't encountered any issues with it.
Almost all games that I have tried worked flawlessly with proton
Welcome to the dark side! We've got cooki... penguins!

Quoting: LinasThere's at least a few guys at my work who pre-ordered a Steam Deck, and none are big on Linux, much less on Linux gaming. Actually they are more of console gamers, and are comparing the Steam Deck with the likes of Nintendo Switch.
I feel that's ok. So many people are using phones or routers (or lamps :D ) that are running Linux and they don't know...

Quoting: DerpFoxThe Index as impressive as it is in terms of tech. It was (and still is) way overpriced in the current VR market.
They can't even supply the demand, so you're obviously wrong here.
We can take a look on Steam's own numbers. While Valve fans are more likely to buy an Index than others, users of most headsets are still likely to use Steam, right?

And as I just looked, this one is healthy as well. :)

Quoting: denyasisBack to VR... I dunno about "gimmick", but the headset is definitely in the "dude toy" realm. I can't imagine using this when my kids were babies (monitoring naps), my current aged kids (playtime), other people in the living room (some one gonna get hit), or really anywhere where some awareness is needed. Perhaps I'm the only one with these circumstances.
Quoting: haikuMy wife would kill me if i isolate with a VR headset
I don't know about your lives' circumstances(*) of course, but independent of VR, everybody should have at least a little time where he doesn't need to pay attention and can close the door behind them, I think. (I'm just arranging this for me and my wife, "just" four years after the children arrived. ;) )

(*) I had a great typo here: "livers' circumstances" :D

Quoting: slaapliedjeI should spend more time in VR for sure. Also, someone should mod the rest of the Half-Life games into VR... I feel a lot will be left out / missing from Alyx's experience by making a flat version... Like being able to hide behind desks and throw grenades at the enemy. And realize how terrible you are at throwing things...
Don't need VR for that, I see it with shame every time I try to play with balls with my little ones (4 yo). :D
Ha, I don't have any little ones to do that with. Maybe someone can code a 'kid simulator'... then again maybe that is a horrible idea.
Absolutely. I heard they've given out baby simulation dolls to teenage girls - so they'd avoid teenage pregnancies. :-D

Quoting: WorMzyI get that Alyx was supposed to be a showcase of VR potential and shoehorning keyboard and mouse support afterwards is unlikely to provide a comparative gaming experience, but it annoys me that I can't play the latest game in a series I've been playing since the late 1990s just because I can't splash out £1000+ on an sparsely-used gimmicky bit of tech that I wouldn't even be able to use unless I reorganise my living room.
I've seen lately that there's a company leasing VR headsets. I missed Half-Life completely, but when I play Alyx some day, it will be with a VR set.
