Spiritfarer for Linux is now live on itch.io, dev apologises for ableist writing

Huh. I did notice that bit of dialogue, but thought they did a pretty good job of communicating that it wasn't wheelchairs in general that were bad, but the character's resentment at how they were seen by others due to the device. But then, I'm able-bodied and thus don't have the experience to really comprehend the point of view.

Good on them for taking this as an opportunity to improve their craft rather than get defensive about it. The writing overall is top-notch (and that particular character is among my favourites) even if I did find the ending unsatisfying.

Ludo is a new sleek front-end for Libretro, as an alternative to RetroArch

Bah.

Just tried out Ludo and it's just as difficult to get games into your library as Retroarch. And, in fact, some of the games that it does pick up in a scan don't actually work.

I'll stick with Mednafen I guess. Not as fancy, but a hell of a lot easier to use and more reliable.

Very interested in this. I find Retroarch terribly awkward to set up and use, so hopefully Ludo will be quite a bit more intuitive.

What are you playing this weekend? We're Linux distro-hopping

I played some Chronicon now that the 1.0 version is out and....honestly I wasn't having that much fun with it. The early levels of each class seem so underpowered, and the Berserker even more so. Not sure I want to play a game when i start out feeling so weak that even the beginner trash mobs take many hits to kill and I'm walking around really slow.

This morning I tried Dorfromantik, which is in development on Itch. It's not due for a full release until next year, but what's there is pretty interesting. It's basically a strategy game where you have a deck of land tiles that you place one at a time, and satisfying the requirements given to you adds more tiles to your stack. The object of course is to get as far as you can before you run out of tiles. There's still work to be done on it, but what's there is quite good.

Earlier in the week I finished Spiritfarer. Great game, enjoyable in every aspect except for the windmill. But aside from that one blemish and the fact that I didn't find the ending very satisfying, it was a worthwhile experience. Not a lot of replay value, but that's fine. Not everything needs to be a repeat experience.

Growbot looks like they lifted the Amanita Design (Machinarium, Samarost, etc.) style wholesale.

To be honest, the sawmill minigame became a lot less annoying once I got a little practice with it. And the fact that the windmill minigame is much more frustrating. Worse, it's frustrating with a low yield, so you have to do it a lot to get a decent amount of resources. Not to mention, even if you mess up on the sawmill, you still get resources out of it. The main reason to follow the lines is to get bonus material.

That said, as time goes by you do find that you don't need to necessarily keep your crafting/growing stations going all the time. There's a lot of temptation to overproduce, which leaves you with loads of extra stuff you're not actually using. So it's not really all that hectic, and there's not really any penalty to speak of for taking your time with stuff.

There is one passenger that you'll want to rush through though, since they have a negative impact on all the other passengers. But otherwise it can be chill if you like.

Does anyone else think the "gun" in this is oddly similar to the one from Antichamber? I can't shake how much it reminds me of that.

Got it this morning and played a bit of it. Very good start, it'll be interesting to see where it goes. The animations are extremely well done and the overall presentation is fabulous. I haven't gotten into too much platforming, which seems to be an element later on, and just the beginner steps of building up my boat. But I like what I'm seeing.

"Save your progress using a specific consumable in a safe room."

Ugh. So they've gone the "frustrating game mechanics to build tension" route.

A weekend round-up: tell us what play button you've been clicking recently

I've been playing Littlewood a lot, and it's great. A bit of a slog in the late game when you're spending all your time farming for rare items though. I also thought there'd be a little more story once a Certain Location was unlocked, but there's really nothing much there. A pity, maybe something will get added in a content update.

Also trying out Synergia, which was given to me. It's...not that great to be honest. It reads like Ghost In the Shell fanfiction, and it's pretty clear that few if any of the devs have really done much serious writing. Most of it feels like a first draft, with awkward dialogue that often goes nowhere, a reliance on genre tropes and worldbuilding done by just telling you stuff, and the occasional continuity error. I kinda see what they're going for, but the execution is very flawed. That said, it's about the same quality of writing I see in most Visual Novels I've tried, so maybe it's good in that sense?
