Quoting: TheSHEEEPNothing in reality looks like bloom does.Of course they can't accurately simulate the way your eyes work and the way your brain fills in the blanks. That's why I added "If you're trying to simulate a photographic look". Check the theory section in this article [External Link] for a brief explanation. Sometimes in film this is actually deliberately overdone to give a "dreamy" look to the image. In any case, I maintain that a subtle bloom effect can make a highlight pop out and actually seem bright, not just white.
Quoting: TheSHEEEPBrightness doesn't "bleed over" to adjacent imagery like that, making you unable to see contours of what is next to the light source. You'd have to look directly into the sun to get that - in games it is always applied to every light source, no matter how small. It's just applied globally.Yes, bloom is applied to all highlights. That's the point. Also, please don't look directly into the sun. You'll go blind.
Quoting: TheSHEEEPJust like nothing in reality looks like motion blur (we'd all throw up constantly if it did).Fully agreed on motion blur. It's a console trick to make a low framerate seem less jerky. It always does more harm than good.
Quoting: TheSHEEEPBut bloom is just the "look, mum, I got shaders in my game!"...In nine-and-a-half cases out of ten I agree. I'd look for examples of the remaining half, but I'm not that committed to "winning" this debate. :)

The glow in this game it over the top though.

Quoting: TheSHEEEPBloom, the bane of graphics quality since early 2000s.Bloom actually adds to realism if it's subtle enough and done correctly. If you're trying to simulate a photographic look that is. I agree it used to look horrible in most older games, but so did SSAO until just recently. I haven't felt the urge to disable bloom in many modern titles.
I have disabled it in every single game since (where possible) and am just amazed that there are still devs out there thinking there's any value to it.
The glow in this game it over the top though.

Quoting: slaapliedjeAlso, and maybe this is just me, but the party based isometric RPGs are the best ones. The Skyrims of the world are like graphical errand runners. :P.It's not just you.

Quoting: lucifertdarkWhy change the story from the game that much? This could be considered a spoiler I guess, but if you read the journals in the game, the cultists do actually want to "burn" everyone who isn't a follower of the goddess with her power. I guess that's not much different from a deadly plague.

Quoting: lucifertdarkDoes this remind anyone else of the old C64 games called The Last Ninja? is anyone else old enough to remember them or have played them back when they were released?I remember the games (I loved the music in TLN2), but the gameplay is very different. :)

Quoting: PatolaSome people said Wasteland 2 (which I just bought on that humble bundle classic, but haven't played yet) also works that way.Wasteland 2 is a classic cRPG, much like a modern Fallout 2. Not surprising, as the original Wasteland is said to have been a big inspiration for Fallout. While the combat is turn-based and tactical, there's a lot more to the game. I loved Wasteland 2, but it doesn't seem similar to Satellite Reign or Shadow Tactics.
The Humble Classics Return Bundle is a really good deal for Linux gamers

Wait, maybe they already did? Impossible to say.

Quoting: throghWell, another bundle with mostly DRM-content locked by Steam. Thanks, but not needed! :)As soon as someone codes a "throgh-bot" to post "STEAM IS EVIL DRM! I SHALL NOT BUY THIS!" under every article that mentions Steam, you're not needed either.

I guess your definition of rpg/action should cover Mad Max and Shadow of Mordor as well. And Tomb Raider? Personally I wouldn't call these RPGs though. I like open world action games with plenty of exploration, but their stories don't leave much room for role-playing.

Quoting: NarvarthWe've got good old Witcher 2.Quoting: slaapliedjeIn case you missed these RPGs; Wasteland 2, Shadow Run, Bard's Tale (4 is coming!), Pillars of Eternity, Tyrant, Neverwinter Nights:Enhanced Edition, plus all the other EE games. Of course if you do like old school RPGs, GOG has all the gold box ones wrapped up for Linux too. They are all old school /sometric RPG (i.e. Baldur's gate style). That's nice, but we have zero first person RPG with a non linear story and/or open world. Maybe Dying light (rpg/action) but that's all. One game.
Some games like Skyrim, Gothic 3, Kingdom Come: Deliverance etc. are really missing on Linux.

I'm totally fine with a two hour experience. It's a decent length for a feature film, so why not a game.
On the other hand, I can't justify paying more for a two hour game than I'd pay to see a movie, so this will go on my wishlist for now.
