Don't Sink, a sandbox adventure pirate RPG now has Linux support
30 Jan 2018 at 6:33 am UTC

If you watch the trailer, you'll notice the zooms, transparencies and smooth scrolling and realise that it isn't so much pixel graphics as low-resolution art on a modern engine. A stylistic choice if you will. And the wavy, blurred reflections in the water weren't made with old-school blitter magic. The style might seem retro, but the game isn't.

Anyway, I'm keeping my eye on this. I like three fourths of "sandbox adventure pirate RPG". It's just the "sandbox" part that turns me off a bit. Sandbox is like open-world but without proper goals and story progression.

SteamOS updated & Steam Client Beta adds support for 2x scaling for those with 4K monitors and more

Quoting: NanobangYay! I'll no longer have to squint to use Steam's desktop client on my 1080p TV---as soon as I figure out how/where to set the "environment variable'GDK_SCALE=2'" for the Steam client. :P

No, really. Someone please help me.

Please.
The safest way to set the variable only for Steam is to copy /usr/share/applications/steam.desktop to ~/.local/share/applications/, then edit the copied file and add the variable to the exec line. If your line looks like mine Exec=sh -c 'STEAM_FRAME_FORCE_CLOSE=1 steam' %U just change it to Exec=sh -c 'GDK_SCALE=2 STEAM_FRAME_FORCE_CLOSE=1 steam' %U
You can undo the change by deleting your custom desktop file.

Remember to change your desktop and panel launchers as well if you've got them. You're on XFCE so you should be able to just right click the icon and choose "Edit Launcher" if I recall correctly.

If the nudies give you the horn, please ignore TheRiddick's advice and think of something more appropriate.
Certainly not.
Just a joke.

Quoting: ElectricPrismI'm just poking at the idea that while the GOL audience might prefer nude female models they might have a drastically different opinion if the post contained nude male characters.
They might, but that's their problem. It's just people without clothes anyway. Who cares if they've got digital dangly bits.

Quoting: ElectricPrismIn many cultures it's common to find outright prejudice against nudity while completely accepting deplorable acts of graphic violence. I have no problem with nudity whatsoever, in fact I think the common one-world culture is finally starting to prevail away from our dark age roots.
Agreed, this glorification of violence is downright twisted.

OBS Studio NDI Plugin for Linux, send video from one Linux PC to another

@elmapul, I think you might still be mixing up streaming in order to play remotely (steamlink style) with livestreaming for audiences over the internet, or recording a gaming session. This is about the latter use cases. There's a noticeable delay, but it has no effect on the actual gameplay.

Looks like first-person steampunk dungeon crawler 'Vaporum' is coming to Linux

Quoting: BeamboomLooked cool, but very odd movement in that you can only turn 90 degrees and advance like on a game board. Wonder what the reasoning is behind this odd design decision? To emulate a board game?
I would think it is more likely to emulate the old dungeon crawler formula.
Dungeon crawlers have already made a comeback, haven't they? I thought even you young whippersnappers would be familiar with Legend of Grimrock if not the rest.

But man, good old Dungeon Master, the Eye of the Beholder series, Lands of Lore, Captive, Bloodwych, the Might and Magic series, Ishar... Now that I think about it, it must have been an important genre before "real" 3D rpg games arrived on the scene.

The Linux 2017 GOTY Awards are now over, here's the winners

Quoting: EhvisFor favourite porter I voted for Knockout games because I found Aaron Melcher's name in the credits for Linux/Mac programming. I hadn't even heard that he was involved before then, so I decided to reward the work done completely out of the spotlight. Seems I was the only one.
In the credits of Tacoma I assume? Was he involved in any other ports last year?

Killing Floor 2 for Linux is 'indefinitely on hold' as they can't find a developer

Quoting: Whitewolfe80Yeah but Carmack is not exactly Linux friendly since he has gone on record to say releasing quake 3 on linux was a giant waste of resources
Quoting: omer666So that's not what one would call "a giant waste of ressources" even for a troll like Carmack
I am becoming more and more convinced that Linux is a cult, where if you mention any flaws, you get attacked. Jeeze.
Says the man who attacks any negative comment against a developer or porter, deserved or not.

We have no way of policing the actions and words of everyone who chooses to use Linux, and we're often very publicly in disagreement, and those facts alone prove we're nothing like a cult.

Realistic racing game 'DRAG' coming to Linux soon, built on Linux and it looks astonishing

Yay! A contingency plan for when I get tired of (crashing my car in) Dirt Rally!

Quoting: KuduzkehpanWith some weapons attached to chasis this game will be something more than racing ^^
I'd argue it would be less than racing, but to each their own. ;)

The current Humble Monthly Bundle has Civilization VI and some DLC for Linux gamers

I really dislike the whole idea of the monthly bundle. For the same reason I wouldn't want to buy a sack of stuff for cheap in the grocery store, with the promise that there's at least one product in there I'd actually eat. I think the concept "muddles" the market, even more than normal bundles. Also there's my dislike of subscription services in general.

Civ VI is on my wishlist, but I'll pass on the monthly, again.
