Songbringer, a procedural action RPG released with Linux support, my thoughts

Nice review. I'm not usually a fan of procedurally generated stuff, as it's almost never as good as hand designed when it comes to story and progression, but this does look rather unique and interesting.
Just one thing Liam, I don't think this particular pixelated art style is actually "retro" in any sense of the word. I can't think of any actual oldies that sport a similar style or colour scheme.

Yay. American handegg. "It captures the sport’s essence" eh? Does it simulate doping? How about brain injury due to repeated concussions? /troll

I don't mind challenging platformers, but I'm not sold on Meat Boy -- for reasons I can't quite pin down. The fast-paced gameplay makes me think the devs are Sonic fans. Too bad I never was.
Quoting: fagnerlnBut as someone commented on Youtube, this looks like a cheap mobile endless runner. It sure doesn't play like one.

Quoting: wleoncioBelieve it or not, you won't find the familiar H-shifter in modern high end rally cars. WRC drivers use either paddles or sequential manual stick shifts that AFAIK work like you described. Clutch is basically only needed to get the car moving. I guess if you're going for total realism, you'd need all kinds of setups to cover all the available car classes in Dirt Rally.Quoting: ArthurHow does it work in practice though? How does it know to gear down instead of up - do you have to brake while shifting down in order to gear down instead of going to a higher gear?On the DFGT, the stick has three positions: neutral (centered), up (away from you) and down (towards you). By default, pulling the stick towards you shifts up and pushing it away shifts down. You can hear a click when it reaches those extreme positions, and after you let it go, a spring brings the stick back to center.

Quoting: ArthurI might quite possibly get it. Maybe I should get a wheel first though...? Dirt Rally is difficult with just a keyboard.Analog controls are a must unless you're playing a very simplistic arcade racer. A decent gamepad does the job, but a wheel does it better. Their accuracy, range and more natural feedback will definitely give you an edge.

Quoting: PlintslîchoShmerl is absolutely right. Windows is definitely not "a must for gaming". I enjoy gaming just fine without it. You're moving the goal posts.Quoting: ShmerlNot for gaming.Especially for gaming, simply for the fact that most games produced for PC are still only available and produced for Windows. I’d say that for someone who always wants to play the latest and greatest titles on PC Windows still is the operating system of choice.

Quoting: subHmm, I wonder if this hints that HL3 will probably never see the light of day.Because it's a story he wanted to write, and he knows won't appear in a game? If HL3 ever materializes, I doubt it would be based on any plans that might have existed for HL2 EP3.
I'm pretty sure Laidlaw (still) knows the state of this game.
Why would he release this, if HL3 is coming?

Quoting: CybolicWell, I'm mostly basing it on my own experience, where I had to run a specific piece of graphing software for Windows for a math course on my previous aging laptop and there was no way I would ever be able to get it to run anything as new as GTK3.Hmm... I don't get why that should stop you from improving Vineyard. I'd imagine an older version of your software would work just fine in this case. Just leave GTK2 support in a low-effort maintenance branch or something.
