@Cyba.Cowboy
Whatever happened to the statistics on this website? Maybe it's just me, but I can't seem to find the option anymore... Ditto for the forums.
There's apparently no dedicated article or FAQ entry to refer to, or maybe I just didn't find it, but here's a quote from Liam's recent "March 25 reminder - GamingOnLinux needs your support":
Additionally, our Forum was closed in December 2024 due to the UK's new wide-reaching Online Safety Act. Not many at all actually used it as most of the community is on Discord, but it's still a shame. There's been a few other smaller changes in comments and profiles to keep us out of scope of the law to hopefully not have any issues. No changes are up for discussion on that. This does not affect our regular news posting at all.
The statistics (and PC info) aren't mentioned here, but the reason is the same. Ditto for DMs etc.

It's a stupid (and stupidly vague) law. I don't see how opt-in collection of information about our hardware for anonymous statistics endangers anyone's online safety. That said, Liam just can't risk a potential fine.

I have looked at the product site and I'm unable to figure out if the latter can provide power to the Steam Deck (or PD-capable laptop). Am I missing something or is unclear from the info available?
There's this:
One type-c cable can realize various USB C equipment connection, can transmit signal and charge at the same time.
So, you can charge devices from the usb-c port, but I can't find any power output specs even in the manual. Should be enough for a mobile device, possibly the deck, but I don't know if it can provide enough power for a laptop.

@jordicoma
So summarizing, you need the controller, a way to update it (probably you need windows for it) and a future version of steam.
Officially you need either Windows or a Mac with their more recent controllers, yeah. But this might help you run the upgrade tool in Wine if you don't mind a bit of tinkering:

In addition to what Liam said, they do explicitly state "Available on Windows, Linux and SteamOS (Steam Deck)" on the Steam page. Specifically in the feature list, just above system requirements.

Could be fun, could be infuriating. I guess I'll find out.

EDIT: Beat the first tournament. Definitely more fun than infuriating. And very very silly.

(Somehow I still got a notification for the reply even though I unsubscribed from the comment thread. Hmm...)

Snap Store is open source. Literally and any other ways. Where you host it then, is another matter. You can host your own store with snaps.
All I've claimed is that the code for the backend is not available. The snapcraft.io website code isn't it. And I personally consider the backend an integral part of the Ubuntu Snap Store.

Whether or not it is possible to host your own snap packages is irrelevant to what I said.

As you suggest "do you trust Canonical"
No, all I said is "Whether or not you trust Canonical is up to you, obviously" in reply to Scaine bringing up the issue of trust.

well, do you or those concerned in this argument trust the server holders of the common websites you seldom visit? Right.
No, I don't trust most of them. Again, how is this relevant? (I do trust Liam though. :wink:)

Just to make this absolutely clear, I never even hinted that someone should not use Ubuntu or Snap. Maybe you're confusing me with someone else? I might occasionally make the mistake of discussing a technical detail or (like in this case) a licensing/transparency decision, but I don't take part in pointless distro wars in general. I like that there's something for everyone. Please stop trying to drag me into an argument.

Specifically one of the early 1900s Singer Sphinx models. But definitely also a submachine gun of some sort.

They said "everything else you run", so there's no contradiction between what you both are saying.
You're right, he probably only means the Snap Store client. Which doesn't do anything useful without the proprietary backend.
