Fedora considering adding in 'privacy-preserving' telemetry

It wouldn't necessarily have to be though, I've certainly been unhappy with Redhat's behaviour since before IBM. It's not even so much that they want a support license for RHEL, what irks me the most is that they lock up their solutions behind paywalls. That'd be like Microsoft requiring a $300 MSDN subscription to access MSKB articles to fix the crap MS supplies.
Years ago, before CentOS, I'd have RHEL on a server. I needed a Redhat distro because of this Ensim virtual hosting appliance system I was using (like Cpanel, only a more virtualized system, everything chroot'ed, and somewhat more fragile). I didn't actually have the license, it's the web host that's "renting" it to me. I could run "up2date" but I had no RHN credentials. I don't know if I could have got a sign in, but that's not the kind of thing I waste my time on. (That's a "thanks for nothing" attitude from me and I'll find my own solution... e.g. ditch their kernel and roll my own). I used to help people with their web servers and stuff too and it made it difficult.
Eventually it could be a lesson for all those "Gnu's not cool anymore" parrots too. Maybe they'll stop praising licenses like BSD and MIT as being "more freedom". Redshart could legally remove probably half of their srcrpms right now and they don't even so much has have to provide a link to the original source, never mind their patchsets and build configuration.

Quoting: F.UltraTo this and every other "IBM IS BEHIND THIS!!!" posts above I just want to point out that Red Hat representatives have come forward (they did this with the recent GPL thingy) and said that IBM have not directed Red Hat in any way shape or form, they exist as a independent brand under IBM and so far IBM have left them alone.Maybe those representatives believe so, but IBM owns the company and they certainly will have influence. Spokespeople won't be privy to, say, a meeting with their CEO and an IBM exec leaning on them to increase revenue by any means.

Wine 8.12 brings more Wayland work and performance improvements

I've not heard anything more about that... just like you don't hear too much about them superseding dxvk anymore (and their vkd3d doesn't cut the mustard for DX12 gaming)
The TKG patches are very complicated, and I get in over my head when things are broken.

I use the "frogging family" build system, especially for my Proton builds. I like it because it's native builds with my toolchains, not containerized tomfoolery with valve's environment.

Kron4ek usually has a current wine staging already done up, ready to build (using that same build generator). Well, in a day or so it will be 8.12 probably.

Quoting: ShmerlNever tried using fsync since I didn't figure out a clean way to apply those patches to upstream Wine.Unless it's just been rebased, I don't think it ever would. There's a lot of MacGyvering that goes on with TKG, like reverts so the patches will apply, for example.
But I build Wine + esync (from staging patchset). It works well so far.

(I just could not leave this thread alone without saying something sarcastic about them :-)
I agree we don't need yet another silly light weight GL implementation too though (and this is mostly for web use in mind). We've already got EGL in mesa.
P.S. Zink is getting better too, such that some vendors are implementing as their primary OpenGL driver.

Quoting: BoldosUmmm.... Why?:shock:Umm, Meta, that's why. Because they are your favourite company.

Quoting: PublicNuisanceMy thoughts would be that if it's opt out instead of opt in by default then it's a terible idea. Also saying "privacy preserving telemetry" is an oxymoron to me. If you are giving up any data then it is not preserving your privacy. My goodness, it's a trend these days, isn't it. Words mean things... gaslighting buzzwords and phrases piss me off.

I've only just gotten back on track with Wine 8.11. Since 8.7, I hadn't been able to use it. I use wine-tkg patchsets to get Fsync support and I figured that's what was breaking it (patches, compiles but fails to run any games). I kept going back to Wine 8.6.1 (and recompiled it to test my toolchains and ever changing system environment and it was all good).
When Wine 8.10 couldn't even run "wine notepad.exe" (not even winecfg would run to get that off the ground) with a bunch of dll errors an being unable to start the explorer shell, I tried a plain build of 8.10 and it was still broken.
I saw mrdeathjr post a similar error for Wine 8.10 and that's when I knew for sure it wasn't just me and my toolchains etc.
But now everything I have in Lutris works perfectly with Wine 8.11 (TKG with Esync, Fsync) as my system wine including, most importantly, the EA app. Hopefully 8.12 will be equally fine.
P.S. For continuity, yes, Wine 8.12 TKG is good for me, same as 8.11. I've been using it for my system wine for a few days now and all my stuff in Lutris works the same.

So far, this game is kind of like:
Half Life 2 x (Deus ex human rev. + Doom 3)
I am liking it so far.
Too many games on the go right now though, it's like having all my birthdays at once, or something :)

I have more games than I can wrap my head around on my Arch gaming setup, I need more games here. So open source games, and even Linux binaries from GoG that don't need any game/store client, though rare, are what I set up here. I still have my old, original UT2004 directory with libraries dropped in so it still runs. (the 64 bit binaries that came in a patch from Icculus)
Anyway, I'm happy with the end result. It's an old game, with rudimentary navigation aids etc. but I played for quite a while last night. Got swords to chop with, fought some enemies on a bridge. I'm seeing some familiar nuances from my time playing Skyrim, too.

Quoting: CyrilFirst of all, it's old, I wanted the latest code and I want it now. Secondly, I'm not doing this on Arch, it's my own custom (tailored exactly to me), 64 bit only, from-scratch system. Even on Arch though, I don't wait for them, if I want something, or want something done differently, I take over.Quoting: Grogan...... Or you could had just wait to install the official Arch Linux package to avoid all of this...

Thanks, I actually do have a trial of Amazon Prime on the go (needed free fast shipping for something heavy) and I claimed it. It's now in my GoG library.
This is a game I'd looked at a few times but didn't bite. Awesome to get it free, without having to jump through any hoops (just one sign in to amazon and a few clicks). If I'd have remembered it, I'd have probably gone back and bought this game later.
