I now remember why I bought it, years ago I wanted to try a racing game "Burnout Paradise" with a joystick (I used to use them in the 90's) and it didn't work out so well, a game pad type like XBox 360 was better.
But this is an actual flight game.
All I need is joydev for USB sticks, any other logitech joystick drivers are for game port.
P.P.S.
IS working (button presses and axes registering in test apps) but not recognized in this game and there's no compatible profile defined. I can't get a peep out of it in game.

Quoting: denyasisProlly the same one I have: the Extreme Pro 3D (something like that). Funny for me, the game wouldn't detect it native, but did just fine using proton.I didn't want to touch it until I had vacuum with dust brush in hand (couldn't even see the logo on it), but I got it out and indeed, that's what it is, "Extreme 3D Pro". I don't remember if I ever plugged that in on Linux. I'll have to check my kernel config.
I'm partial to using that old stick, mostly cause it's what I played X2 on when it came out, lol.

Wine 8.6 out now with bundled Musl math library

It's somewhat similar to distros that patch the same kernel for their entire life cycles (years in the case of "enterprise" distros)
It's more about the patch sets.
You should see the commits that have to be reverted to apply proton patch sets to upstream wine (not only to apply patches, but some of the patches supersede changes). It's not easy to rebase.

Quoting: DellOptiplex9020Opinion: the image in this article looks like a concept and not something Microsoft would actually make.Sure they would. Look what they did with "netbooks", they brought Windows XP out of retirement, just because they couldn't stand that those devices were shipping with Linux. They they moved them to "starter" editions of Vista, and they became quite horrid.

Now that you mention it, I also have a flight stick sitting in the corner, collecting dust. It probably works, it's an older logitech. I can't even remember why I bought it or when or if I ever used it.

Quoting: TheSHEEEPFor me, I was completely unable to fly with keyboard + mouse (in any flight game, btw, I just can't).I was having trouble with the tutorial with keyboard and mouse, so I tried it with my XBox 360 controller and it was pretty good. I haven't yet gotten into much besides basic control of the ship, but yes already I found myself using both.
But even a controller (like XBoxOne controller) makes it very comfortable for me.
Or a hotas for a bit more immersion, but that's IMO optional.
Since X4 is a lot more than just the "fly spaceship" part, controller + keyboard might be the best variant to me, as you'll need a lot of keys to do all the things you can do in the game - more keys than any controller and most hotas have.

That's a real treat, a native Vulkan game that I can just install and run. (the installer is GoG's gtk+ graphical installer actually... doesn't like my styling, but it's navigable and functional)
It works out of the box, on my custom "from scratch" system. (pure 64 bit, so no steam or anything and no wine... it's a more serious system). Other than running some tests/benchmarks to see it work, this is the first actual Vulkan thing I have on this system.
The Ultra preset is fine, but I have to use cheaper antialiasing. MSAA 2x is OK, the game doesn't need much.
Pure Alsa audio here, so no problems with OpenAL for me
Now I just have to figure out how not to suck at flying a ship.

Well, I'm not a fan of sims like this, but I'm going to give it a whirl just because it's on GoG and it's got a Linux native port. I love space stuff, even if I just mess about and fly some ships it'll be cool
P.S. Hah... for once, Linux users get a better experience. GoG is giving me the whole thing in a 17.5 Gb archive installer (one of those .sh files with shell script grafted on) instead of making me download the .exe and all the .bin files.
The DLC are SEPARATE offline installers, UNLIKE the Windows DLC, which are 1 Mb .exe files that download the content, too :-)

Edit: It seems I have to take back a lot of what I said here. They must have gone on a blitz in the last week or so, as I have found that with tonight's Mesa build, I pretty much have no complaints.
The shader cache is working as expected now.
I don't have to disable gpl for any of the games I've tested (and Rage 2 runs correctly)
Of relevance: It can be disabled if necessary with
---------------------------------------------------
I think that's wrong to enable the graphics pipeline library by default, at least at this time.
It harms Vulkan games (shader cache... see point below)
It harms DirectX 12 (vkd3d-proton), by disabling the on-disk shader caching completely (e.g. no mesa_shader_cache or mesa_shader_cache_sf if gpl). Vkd3d-proton has it's own mechanism, where it caches a primitive and links it in at pipeline time (much like the GPL with DXVK, only it needs to cache more than just its pipeline state)
At this time it's mostly only good for DXVK. (from what I hear, some native Linux Valve titles like DOTA 2, recently ported to Vulkan, also support this but not much else)
Just like mesa_glthread and adaptive sync (also presumptuous defaults). In EVERY case, mesa_glthread is detrimental to me, even in the "poster child" application where it's purported to improve: Bioshock Infinite (native). I patch those defaults in driinfo_radeonsi.h (I change them to false)
I've been using mesa-master (well, "main" now, for the politically correct) for months now so I get the latest commits related to this graphics pipeline library. and I can tell you this gpl is not ready to be enabled by default, or rather, other things won't like it.
As the majority of games I play are DirectX 11 and 9, I have been enabling it by default globally with a variable (RADV_PERFTEST=gpl in /etc/profile.d), and disable it on command line per invocation for games that don't like it. That's fine for me, but could cause problems for those unaware of the problems.
I haven't done a build in some days on gaming system (I don't have this change yet) but now that this is a default, it won't be RADV_PERFTEST="" anymore,
it will be RADV_DEBUG="nogpl" to disable it.
[strike]P.S. I actually have a game that won't launch with gpl, Rage 2. It's a Windows game, but it's Vulkan. It just sits there with the library entry showing "running" until I hit stop. It's waiting for something that isn't coming. That will be a good test tonight, I'll get rid of the variables and try the new mesa build's defaults.
... and Rage 2 launches just fine now (and works normally)

Half-Life: Alyx fully playable without VR even on Steam Deck thanks to a mod

This was the one thing that made me regret not having VR, not being able to play this half life game. I'll probably get this now, just so I can see it.
I likely will never get a VR headset. Not only don't I like gimmicky devices, but I don't need that kind of stimulus, I have enough trouble without it. (for one example racing games, I mean actually trying, not just free driving, will wind up my nervous system).
Most devs don't bet the farm on it... they make their games playable without it. Exclusivity leads to limited sales (Valve has another trick... making games isn't where their money comes from, moreover, they worked with a tired old game engine for decades and their success was viable multiplayer, and mods, bling currencies and gamer friendly policies etc. that kept their games going).
OT, but that reminded me of this. The source engine (both versions) was so bad, loading thousands and thousands of little files from many SDK archives, that Valve started trying to market ramdisk software lol! (before SSD's were commonplace in consumers' hands). I thought WhyTF would Valve be spinning wheels on this for? Then it dawned on me... the source engine games would greatly benefit from this. That used to come up in my Store feed, I found it amusing. The Store page is still there for reference, but there's no buy buttons or anything.

Death Stranding Director's Cut, Aliens: Fireteam Elite and more in Humble Choice
6 Apr 2023 at 9:38 pm UTC
I can't really comment on Death Stranding much because it's a game I can't play (AVX instructions and old Nehalem Corei7 that they can pry from my stiff, dead hands)
P.S. What they tend to do with a director's cut for games is also bundle content packs and stuff though too. So it still justifies it if the director's cut doesn't add more scenes or game play. It's still a "bonus" edition sort of thing.
6 Apr 2023 at 9:38 pm UTC
Quoting: whizseIt's weird, because the directors cut of Death Stranding is measured as being shorter in length compared to the normal version. So presumably that means they removed stuff instead?...By definition of "Director's Cut" that would be entirely possible. The final cut may have had some scenes added back, or changed to have more dialog etc.

Kind of insulting when you think about it, these same publishers will charge you more money for the very thing their pinch faced execs rejected :-)

Quoting: Purple Library Guy"Director's Cut" gradually lost its meaning in movies, but I don't see how it could have ever had a meaning in computer games. It may or may not have more content, depending on what the difference is between the two. Supposedly the director knows best, but the bean counters have the final say. It's probably mostly bollocks, but it would be silly to have a director's cut if there wasn't something better or at least different about it.
