Adventure platformer 'Celeste' from the creators of TowerFall has released with Linux support

Quoting: no_information_hereFor anyone who has played this, I am wondering about the style? Is it a metroidvania (like recent Iconoclasts) or more just puzzle-platformer (like Blackhole). It gets harder and harder to figure out what to expect.

If it only puzzles, like Super Meat Boy, I start to get bored after a while. I like a broader world to tie it all together. Even things like You Have to Win the Game and Super Win the Game have enough context to make it all hold together and feel more than just a slog through one puzzle screen after another.
To start with I din't play this one yet. Only saw videos and tweets about it, since I've been following the project dev's since start.

It started with the Pico-8 retro game Celeste, now called Classic Celest, wich quickly became one of the best games on that platform with several people doing speedruns and modding alternate levels.
You can play that online here in the webbrowser from the pico 8 forums [External Link] or itch.io game page [External Link]

Basically, it improves on the formula of the classic one, where on each screen you have to do a combination of jumps though an hazardous level to reach the exit, and for bonus points capture a some big red strawberries located in hard to reach places. If you die to immediately start on that same screen starting position.

So, for each level: start, jump, die, repeat, leave to next screen

Now to answer it. The first one is pretty much puzzle bazed like meat boy. And this is a bit like it. Though the levels are interconnected. Its basically one whole climbing to the top of the montain. But on this "reimagining" of Celest, it seem they tried to give a story with it, with other characters and so on. But since I haven't played it ye I can't say too much on this one. So MAYBE it "has enough context to make it all hold together" afterall.

Oh... and it has a great great soundtrack!!! It there even is a second B-sides album with remixes from other artist such as the one from FTL (Ben Prunty). Like the Linux version the OST was released on day one.

EDIT: Spellcheck :(

Slightly offtopic, but although there is no GOG Galaxy for Linux, there's an open-source alternative called Games Nebula [External Link] which is very nice and even runs GOG windows games via wine.
Wow.. When did this happen! That's pretty sweeat! Does it track your game hours and clound saves too? (For compatible games of course)

Quoting: GuestAre these things like steam big picture mode, a way to launch games comfortably using a TV and a controller? Or more like PoL or retroarch, a way to easily manage and configure emulators?
The basic app, the Lauchbox is more of laucher/game catologue like retroarch with strong emphasis on emulation, but with PC games included too. That's the one they're thinking of porting to linux. This is the free version.

Then they have BigBox which is "the big picture mode solution". But that one is heavyly dependent on windows and would need a complete rewrite for it to happen in Tux land (there is talk of kickstarter for it though but not just now). This BigBox comes only with the premium version which is their main source of income.

Edit: formatting and added that Bigbox is their main source of income.

First, I'm a big fan of Lutris.

But just to add one key difference in Lauchbox. Besides a straight laucher it also is a game catologue application. It imports you games from steam and file directory folders ou your specified list, and then scraps info from the internet to fill in game boxes art, info from wikipedia, videos and other content related to which game you have.

They also manage a games database [External Link]. Unlike the linux games database (LGDB) [External Link], which I love, it has games from all platforms, including very many old game consoles.

EDIT: fixing typos.

Quoting: liamdaweI especially love the system requirements for Linux "Processor: Potato+", that's the kind of humour I like to see. Doesn't tell you much of course, but it indicates that it should run on most systems.
And specially the last part...

Stardock is planning to release 'Star Control: Origins' on Linux
19 Nov 2017 at 1:40 pm UTC

Quoting: razing32Hmm , that trailer did not tell me much. Is it just a shoot-em up in space ? or is there more to it ?
The trailer is specific for the "hypermelee" space battles only, that was the first feature "released" in the beta a few days ago. The game will have story and travel between the stars metting aliens like the previous Star Control games (though not the same as in the Ur Quan Masters SC2) and if attacked the combat will be 1:1 arcade shoot-em up that till one side runs out of ships.

Quoting: Stardock SiteThe beta unlocks the Fleet Battles feature, where you'll assemble ships in a fleet and engage in battle with fleets controlled by either the computer, humans via the Internet, or even friends sitting at the same PC.
> This Preview Youtube Video [External Link] has a bit of everything planned. Thougth it dosn't show much of the galaxy map or interaction with the species. You can also see videos from earlier games.

Also here is the schedule [External Link] :

Starblast, a frantic online arcade space shooter is now out with Linux support

Aparently there is an freemium online version with ads at https://starblast.io/# [External Link] and one good thing about it is that it has a few community link: reddit, discord and wiki where there are some tips.

For example you can see what is the RCS in the wiki - https://starblastio.gamepedia.com/RCS [External Link] - though admitedly took me be a bit of time to find.
