Steam Play arrived on Linux one year ago, some thoughts

Not to downplay the progress of Steam Play but officially supported ports, “native” or not, will remain vitally important. They shouldn’t just break, but when they do, you’ve paid for official support and you would expect the developer to somewhat promptly fix it.
*Looks at Aspyr.* It’s been what, 5 months now since the Borderlands update? Not even an ETA still.

Quoting: subWhat I don't get is how many people that celebrate Proton, categorically reject Stadia.
Imho in the end it's a similar thing; you're able to play games that are not natively available.
For Stadia it's even the case that it might help the Linux infrastructure and raise acceptance among developers.
Well, Stadia has a number of issues besides whether or not it’s "Linux gaming." Latency, subscription model, Google’s data-grabbing... There’s kind of a lot that you have to overlook to embrace Stadia compared to Proton.
Yeah since proton was announced, Feral have started porting to Switch, iOS, and Android.

There are only two games on their radar and both are far off.

I fear our days of awesome Feral ports are coming to an end.

Dota Underlords changes ranking again to be more about skill and less about time

There is some skill involved.

  • Where you place your units matters

  • Balance between getting a good army right away versus getting more gold instead

  • Knowing who has what and what you should get based on that

  • Which 3 star heroes to go for in a given match

  • Picking the right items for your build

Sure there is some randomness that can make or break a build. A good example of this is going for all 4 trolls. Getting the 5 gold troll can win the game but you may never see him once (I've had that happen to me before) and lose the game on that.

I never played this, probably because I was playing a lot of Dreamcast when this came out. Think I'll pick it up day one.

From that video, this game looks great.

I'll pick it up for sure and I'm excited to see another RTS game on Linux.

Quoting: KohlyKohlI like the genre but I don't care for the time only moves when you move gimmick.
@KohlyKohl What genre are you talking about? I ask because all the roguelikes I have played have the "time only moves when you do gimmick".
I wasn't even thinking about the roguelike aspect but rather as a top down shooter.

Dota Underlords now has scoreboards and more improvements plus a "Proto-Battle Pass" next week

Not a fan of this game. I wish they would do something about the hero randomness and the length of the game.

I know they plan to make a shorter version but I just don't see how they will manage to do that since you already don't have enough time to buy and move around the heroes the way it is.

Steam's top releases of May show why Steam Play is needed for Linux

Quoting: Sir_DiealotOr there are fewer games for Linux released now that SteamPlay is around. Who can say with certainty? Historical data and statistics probably can. Who is going to dig in?
I've been repeating this mantra for 26 years now. What good it has done. I've missed out on a lot and I've come to the conclusion that it will not work for Linux users until the % of users is high enough.

Right now, Linux users are no where near high enough to make anyone care and anything that helps bring people over to Linux is a good idea.

Quoting: KohlyKohlWhen you pick a few heroes you want and they never show up again, that is a big issue in my opinion.
You can also say that you failed to plan for alternatives. Since the sell price of one star heroes is the same as the purchase price, you can store stock a few alternatives.
Sure you can sell level one heros but that doesn't mean the next hero you get will come up either. I stand by that this game isn't fun because of the complete randomness of it. As far as I can tell, there is little skill involved with this game.

I've had several games where all I needed was one more of a heroes to get a three star hero. 20 rounds later and I'm still waiting on that hero...

Another good example is items. If you are lucky enough to get the brawny item and lucky enough to get some good brawny units no one will beat you.

There needs to be a more skillful way to pick heroes and items.
