I've had everything on proton experimental for years now, and it runs wonderfully, no issues. So I'll keep it there. Feels like the perfect balance to me. Like I'm currently using 10 but it's not "officially released" yet. But still no issues!
And I'll pile on to the "it just works" group. I can remember probably around 2012/13/14 I tried linux full time and wasn't happy with it. I had to tinker with EVERYTHING. Had audio issues, drive formatting issues, games needed custom parameters, some games flat out wouldn't run at all, there weren't good replacements for windows apps I needed, etc etc.
Then sometime around 2020 I again made the switch full time because I was so sick and tired of the Microsoft garbage being forced down my throat and no ability to do anything about it. I really felt like microsoft owned my computer and allowed me to use it, but only exactly how they said. It was radically different. Everything just worked! No problems with games, no general os tinkering, replacement apps had come along really far, etc.
Now in 2025, it's like a no-brainer. I really honestly think for a personal computer at home, for all the "average" non-techy people out there (muggles) in your friends & family group, linux is totally an option.
If they're needing a new computer, you can get a framework13 (all amd) for $900 which is AMAZING. Put Mint on that, call it day. Tell them to text you if they need anything. I bet you won't get many texts!

Been playing this on the Deck in bed, while my wife watches her murders (her fav show of all time law n order and she watches all the variants on a loop omgoodness) and I've been LOVING it~!!!! It's got that perfect amount of relaxation as you mentioned. The environments are truly amazing, and I love how different each location is. I'm only on the second location, but yeah, the upgrade loop keeps me going.
Highly recommended!
It's so crazy, because even though I don't really like boaty things in real life (fishing, houseboats, rafting, kayaking, etc etc etc) some of my favorite and most played games on the Deck have been boaty. Dredge, Sail Forth, Dave the Diver, this game .... So strange. Maybe the portable format just leads more to that type of game I guess.

I've used 2fas auth for what I feel like is forever and ever and have loved it. It's open source, no account required, works offline, syncs backup automatically, totally free to use (optional donation), doesn't run a for profit model, etc etc etc.
Steam gets a new Steam Deck-like Performance Monitor now in Beta replacing the FPS counter

I only ever use the fps counter anyway (I use other apps to monitor all the other things on the second monitor) so I won't use this, but I do absolutely love that it's coming to linux eventually. For Steam Deck I love having the expanded options just a shortcut click away.

Borderlands has always been a "meh" series for me, kinda fun, but my interest always fell off super fast. Never could stay playing any of them for very long. So I'll probably pick this up, but several years from now when it's like $10 or something.
Edit: also this has to be the most hilariously tone deaf cash grabs of all time:

It's a "Borderlands 4 ECHO-4 Bundle" ..... that DOESN'T INCLUDE THE GAME!!!!!!!!!! bahahahahhahahahha omg that's hilarious.

And a follow up warning to all my other gamingonlinux friends: DO NOT PURCHASE THIS GAME. at least for now. Let it have a bunch of patches or something. It simply doesn't work. Like at all. Gets past the shaders stuff and then crashes the entire game, every single time. You can force a '-windowed' argument but that doesn't help either because of the new game button.
I haven't been able to play it for one minute. There's a bunch of comments in the discussion forum, they have done some early patches, but nothing helps.
So disappointing for devs of this caliber (or who should be). Sigh.
