The best Linux distributions for gaming in 2026

I'm on cachy, and thus far it's been the only rolling release distro that I haven't had any issues with. Like at all. None. I love it.

Fedora was great when I used it too, but I didn't like that nonsense from last year so I switched. I'm on gnome now (I had issues with kde) so I think this year I'll do a full system wipe and stay on cachy but with cosmic de. So excited to see that have a full release!

GOG has been languishing for years so maybe this’ll be the kick they need to make some forward progress. Like ummm I don’t know … releasing a Linux client. We can dream.

Mine would be a tie between Avowed and Tainted Grail. Both the exact same genre (1st person gigantic sprawling rpg) but polar opposites thematically. Both EXTREMELY good. I didn’t want either to end. Compare that to the Outer Worlds 2 which I’m near the end of and can’t wait for it to end so I can move on. LOL.

If I had to pick a tiebreaker, I think I’d go with Tainted Grail just because it really gave me that old school vibe and the theme was so unique.

Quoting: TriasSteam replay says I played 202 different games this year and of course I'm not able to remember most of them. :). The Top was split between different Paradox grand strategies and Underrail, but those are not 2025 games. If we concentrate on the games of this year I will probably mention two, both very recent: Of Ash and Steel [External Link] and Swordhaven [External Link].

Of Ash and Steel [External Link] is a very immersive Gothic (or Risen)-style ARPG that "don't hold your hand" (meaning, among other things, that you won't even have a map in the first 1/3 of the game and will need to remember surroundings yourself and find quest locations by their descriptions). The game had a very rough start a month ago but now, with 1.05 patch, developers seems to fix at least the most critical bugs and have a good roadmap to move forward.

Swordhaven [External Link] is an isometric-style CRPG from the developers of ATOM RPG.The game was only released recently and I didn't play that much yet but the beginning got me hooked with reactivity and good writing and I have a long-established faith in developers. Also, the game has a Linux version, which is always nice.

Obviously I can't name anything GOTY without finishing at least most of it first but those two games seems to have a potential so far.

:).
I’m super excited to wait for the 1.1 update for Swordhaven for the extra kickstarter content, but I didn’t even know about Of Ash and Steel … ! How?!?!? Thank you so much for recommending! I’ll definitely give this a good sometime this summer as well…!

It just keeps getting worse - Firefox to "evolve into a modern AI browser"

Quoting: CyrilDude, ahah! How many browsers have you tested?! 😄
...
But if anyone of you have a comparison's site of all these browsers I'm still interested indeed, and I'm sure I'm not the only one!
hahah I work in video streaming tech, so I am deeply interested in browsers just in general :) Here you go I'll give you my personal feelings for them:
(btw all of these have no ai integration, I won't use a browser that does)

  • Librewolf - firefox fork with a privacy focus as the core of it - sometimes a little too much. I was forced to undo some of its hardening to make basic sites work (maps for instance, some gaming sites, etc) which if you undo too much then ... ??? But overall it works really well, and it strips out all the mozilla fuckery from regular firefox like pocket, ai garbage, etc.

  • Orion - completely custom build from the Kagi folks - based on webkit. This is so unique and I love it. Currently only avail for macos and ios, but linux build is coming soon. Privacy focused but softer I would say compared to Librewolf, which IMO is a good thing. I don't need to go undo a bunch of stuff to make basic sites work. One killer feature for me is the ability to make two completely separate icons in my macos dock for different profiles. So like I have a personal icon and a work icon, which opens two completely separate windows. Love this. I'm sure other browsers could do this, I just found it really easy with Orion. Once they release the linux build this will be the only browser I use on all devices.

  • Zen Browser - I'm typing this comment from this browser right now. I feel .... meh ... about it. It's REALLY powerful in terms of features. But I think it's just a little too much in the feature set for me. Mostly I just want a browser to be private, have good extension support and then get the F out of the way. Zen does have good privacy and extensions but it also has an INSANE amount of power user features like compact mode, a ton of unique keyboard shortcuts, on and on and on. Which is cool and all but I'm not going to memorize a whole new slew of keyboard shortcuts for only my browser. And some of the features are so unique I can't really remember how to activate them when switching from my laptop to desktop for instance which is just frustrating. It's also vertical tabs ONLY, and I'm an ancient person, so I've never really gotten used to vertical tabs. I really should but ... ???

  • Waterfox - have only basic testing experience with this one. I think some others might be able to comment better on it. It did work well in my testing.

Talking point - what have you been playing lately?

Quoting: adolsonFinally got around to buying Tunic. What a great game! Just finished it, and now working on Clair Obscur.
OMG have such a fun time. That was my game of the year in whatever year it came out. My friend and I played it coop on the couch on the big screen tv, and it was such a blast trying to decipher the manual and explore the world!

We loved it so much we both wound up buying the physical print manual.
