Xorg is dead, long live Wayland - Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL) dropping Xorg

Quoting: CyrilYeah I know, sorry maybe I wasn't clear at all (I use XFCE on Manjaro), I meant: for the whole Wayland thing, XFCE seems to be the black sheep here.
Keep in mind that of all the desktop environments in Linux, only GNOME and KDE Plasma have full Wayland support, and KDE only started recommending Wayland over Xorg a couple of weeks ago.

As I understand it MATE, Cinnamon, Budgie and LXQt only have experimental or no support for Wayland. I'm guessing Xorg will be around for quite a while in most distributions, and there will be time for Wayland ports.

For RHEL Red Hat supports a release for 10 years, so planning ahead for 2035 (RHEL 10 releases in 2025) and dropping a previously deprecated system seems quite understandable in their situation.

Quoting: CyrilWhat about people who likes XFCE (like me)?:happy:
Is there anyone else in the same case?
Unless you use XFCE on RHEL why worry?

Quoting: EhvisEspecially the graphics/animation industry that heavily relies on nvidia may just choose to stick with RHEL9 for a much longer time than RH wants.
Not sure who their customers are, but they are apparently in need of things like HDR.

Red Hat recently redirected a lot of their developers to work on Wayland [External Link]. Specifically to "focusing on gaps in Wayland, building out HDR support, building out what’s needed for color-sensitive work, and a host of other refinements required by Workstation users".

Quite a controversial move as they stopped said developers from maintaing a lot of packages and projects. (On company time at least.)

Seems to be a real "all hands on deck" situation with Wayland.

Wine 8.21 brings High-DPI scaling and initial Vulkan support for Wayland

Quoting: ShmerlDid anyone actually manage to test the new Wayland driver for anything simple?

I tried it, but it's not working:

debug=true DISPLAY='' WAYLAND_DISPLAY='wayland-0' wine regedit
...
009c:err:winediag:nodrv_CreateWindow Application tried to create a window, but no driver could be loaded.
009c:err:winediag:nodrv_CreateWindow L"The explorer process failed to start."
009c:err:systray:initialize_systray Could not create tray window
002c:err:winediag:nodrv_CreateWindow Application tried to create a window, but no driver could be loaded.
002c:err:winediag:nodrv_CreateWindow L"Make sure that your X server is running and that $DISPLAY is set correctly."
Seems to still be missing the bits I mentioned here. I guess it won't be hooked up properly until everything has been merged.

PipeWire 1.0 is out now for modern Audio and Video on Linux

I've been pretty promiscuous when it comes to audio subsystems. Over the years I've used OSS, ALSA, Jack, ESD, PulseAudio.

Maybe it's about time I got my tubes tied - my pipes wired?

Well, I wouldn't recommend it, but negging [External Link] does seem to work for some people.

Quoting: gbudnyI hope that is a legal thing because I don't want to see it removed:
The source code was not leaked but published by Jim Dosé the co-founder of Ritual Entertainment. However it was not a FLOSS release. Every file carries this warning:

"This source is may not be distributed and/or modified without expressly written permission by Ritual Entertainment, Inc."

So legally pretty sketchy.

Quoting: neolithDoes this also work with the original SiN? I am asking because the SiN Gold versions are not sold by GOG or Steam here in Germany, but I think I still have the original game on CD somewhere...
From the FAQ [External Link]: "The files from the original Windows CD also seem to work, but haven't been thoroughly tested" - So fingers crossed?

Edit: Looks like you need to manually convert the video files though.
