Asus announce the ROG Ally gaming handheld

Windows 11 on the device will completely spoil the unit as a handheld device.
It may well end up like the last time ASUS came up with an innovative Linux product; the EeePC (aka netbook):

Back in 2007 it originally came out with a customized Linux desktop that catered for the low spec CPU, the tiny SSDa and small screen.
Actually a really sweet degin. Done right in the first place, but unfortunately just a bit ahead of its time (due to no broadband wireless Internet yet)
Then the people complained that they wanted Windows on it.
That time ASUS took the time to explain that the device needs a special desktop for the low spec CPU, tiny SSD and the small screen.
People refused to think and still demanded Windows.
So ASUS evetually shipped EeePCs with Windows.
People's reaction: Oi, we dont like this. Windows does not work well with the low spec CPU, the tiny SSD the small screen...
So ASUS incrased CPU, SSD, sceen... and price... to adjust to the needs of Windows, essentially killing the original idea of a netbook.... but it rans Windows well.

So, for this ASUS product they skipped the initial stage where they made it right and take the shortcut directly down the wrong path.
Eventually there will be a ROG Ally 2, which has a 22 inch screen, that can be folded over a full mechanical keyboard, 4 kg weight, etc,... essentially killing the idea of a handheld console..... but it will runs Windows well :P

It all depends on the price.
Well, kindof not at all. For me it all depends on the software, in particular the OS. The ASUS thingy won't stand a chance with me for being Windows 11 based.
And that is not because of ideology this and that; okay maybe a bit ideology, but mainly because I do not want to end up with a brick once MS decides to no logner support it (potentially on purpose because it competes with the Xbox ecosystem).

Booo booo, ASUS, booooooooo!

Big Ambitions drops Native Linux support shortly after the Steam release

Quoting: InhaleOblivionthose of us who are lifelong gamers have two PC builds.
Thinking back of the days we played Pong and Pacman.... Yepp I can consider myself a lifelong gamer.
But I do not know a single Person who maintains two dedicated PC hardware sets, one exclusively for Windows and one exclusively for Linux. (Assuming that Raspberry Pis and DIY servers don't count).
Dual boot is was the way to go. But my Windows partition is getting kinda dusty for barely being booted anymore since Proton/WINE works so well.

Big Ambitions drops Native Linux support shortly after the Steam release

Not so big ambitions afterall. Not that native Linux support is still necessary nowa(Proton)days. But it surely demonstrates a good and clean code base. The fact that the developers cannot live up to the (promised?) Linux version does not necessarily show ignorance for Linux, but it shows low ambitions in respect of their own code base.
(needsledd to say I wont buy a game if I already know that the developers have low ambitions for their code base, neither for Windows(!) not for Linux, unless the game is already known to be good despite its bad code base).

Someone released the FOSS RTS 0 A.D. on Steam without speaking to the developers
21 Oct 2022 at 11:00 am UTC

Looks like Valve has already removed it from the Steam catalogue.
Best way to avoid this (and potentially worse scenarios such as rigged/malicious versions) would be if the 0 A.D. devs just released it on Steam themselves. I heard there is some exasperation over a 100$ listing fee that Valve takes even for free games. But even ifso, it might be worth it. Battle for Wesnoth is on Steam for more than 4 years already. Since then I havent heard of any third party attempts to capitalize on the code.

Valheim updated with full gamepad and Steam Deck support

Nice, but how about some footage (with FPS indicator) of a large stone building with terraformed ground surface under it. That's ususally the part where Valheim terribly faults (in its current state)
