According to Kotaku, Microsoft is close to buying Obsidian

Quoting: slaapliedjeWell, currently Obsidian games are published via Paradox, which is probably a large reason why they have DRM-Free and Linux versions in the first place.
Pillars of Eternity II is published by Versus Evil.

As for the rumors, we'll see what happens if it even happens. The games industry is rather cutthroat and over the last few years I've gained an increasing appreciation for just how little in profit margin most companies actually see. Even with crowdfunding or a hit or two, too many medium and large sized companies flirt with bankruptcy all the time. And it's not like it's a cakewalk for small indies either, who often have to go into personal savings to fund projects. It's why I try to buy games I really enjoy at close to full price whenever I can. I wish the best for the Obsidian staff no matter what and hope that there won't be a Telltale-like situation playing out if this supposed deal falls through.

Timespinner, a polished and fun metroidvania, is now available

Quoting: GuestI only see Steam mentioned on the Humble page, nothing about direct download
I just asked on the project's discord [External Link] and got the following reply:
Hopefully later today
It's pretty much a one-man project, so I imagine dealing with a lot of launch issues isn't easy but the dev hasn't forgotten about it.

Quoting: no_information_hereThanks for the review, BTRE!
You have a little redundant edit there.
You saw nothing! but thanks :P

I love a good traditional metroidvania, but I would have to argue that a number of recent games experiment quite a bit.
That paragraph was talking about mechanics. There's little twists here and there in some games (like in this game you can stop time for limited durations) but I can't really recall anything very innovative in recent years save for the hit and miss infusion of "rogue" elements into gameplay sometimes. I mean, I'm not really criticizing the genre for that, they hit on an excellent formula early on so it's wise not to stray too much.

Quoting: Avehicle7887I hope this makes it to GOG since Chucklefish is the publisher, my love for metroidvanias make this an instabuy.
I spoke to the dev before release and he said he had submitted it to GOG. But GOG's process often isn't exactly expedient, consistent or very transparent, so no clue if it'll make it there. The Humble Store link in the article does include DRM-free builds though.

A look at some top Linux games released in 2018

Quoting: liamdaweIs Descent Underground even still going? Was removed from Steam ages ago.
They just delisted it because they didn't want to keep doing Early Access for whatever reason. There have been sporadic updates on kickstarter/elsewhere (and a dev comment [External Link] less than a week ago on steam) and I think the latest is that they're aiming for a full release in the Fall. But who actually knows?

Card-based strategy game Faeria gets massive “2.0” update, moves away from a F2P model

Quoting: abelthorne
There’s plenty of new cards in the update as well [...]
It's worth mentioning that these new cards aren't part of the base game but are from a DLC that you have to buy in addition to the game. New cards will be released as DLCs from now on.
Good point. I'll make that clearer in the article.

The Linux version of Civilization VI should get cross-platform online play in the next few weeks

Quoting: cc2600However, does anyone know about this redshell thing and how it affects the Linux port?
Aspyr have stated [External Link] that the Linux and OSX versions don't have redshell.

Farming sim 'Harvest Life' is now available on Linux

Quoting: KelsI'm surprised that they lifted almost the exact fishing minigame from Stardew Valley. And the idea of dungeon adventuring in a farming sim.
Those elements, and indeed most of the gameplay and even visual style, are directly inspired by the longer-running Harvest Moon/Rune Factory series of games. Stardew Valley's designer has never been shy about admitting that :D

I guess?

Quoting: Purple Library GuyWent back to look at BTRE's review. Man, we're still waiting for really good pirate ship combat, aren't we? I mean, every single game with sailing and cannons, I read the reviews and once again, the actual ship combat is crap at worst or distinctly lacking at best. I want there to be wind. I want to tack at just the right moment and cross the enemy's "T". I want to take advantage of my superior maneuverability and good gunners to hold out of range of the enemy's heavier broadside and peck away with my "long nines". I want to be pirate Horatio Hornblower! None of the games seems to offer much of this. It's saddening.
I'm with you! I'd kill for a good sailing game. The Warhammer Man O'War game is the closest thing to that and it's sadly not very good.

Quoting: Vash63Does anyone know if PoE II has any graphical downgrades on Linux? I was disappointed that the original didn't have the cloth capes. Not sure if any other effects were missing but I hate getting an inferior version.
No difference that I could tell.
