Steam Deck sales still going strong over three years later

I think the only thing that might knock it off the top spot is the Deckard, aka the Steam Grid, or whatever it ends up being called.

I use my Steam Deck daily, and I don't really care about it being underpowered, because it has introduced me to so many genres of Indie and less graphically demanding games, which do run amazingly well on it, not everything has to be about AAA graphics. But when Steam Deck 2 comes out, I'll be sure to get that as well.

This just goes to show how scared Nintendo are of developers making better versions of Nintendo-style games for other platforms.

This just makes me want to support the alternatives even more. We need better alternative versions of Animal Crossing and Splatoon next. We need the consumer to know that they don't have to buy Nintendo hardware to get these experiences anymore.

Valve will join Lenovo at CES 2025 for the future of gaming handhelds

We're still only in the very early days of SteamOS, yet a lot seems to be happening. We need to get Steam on ARM based devices; that could possibly be even bigger, because then you could see a ton of ARM based handhelds ship with SteamOS instead of Android. This could also lead in to a potential NVidia Shield like HTPC powered by SteamOS, and in the future even a Steam Phone. It's getting very exciting.

Quoting: Pengling
Quoting: MrowlThis is why we need all handheld PC's to do well, even the Windows ones, like the Ally, etc.

Why? Because smartphones don't receive the hardcore AAA games that handheld PC's and Nintendo handhelds do, thus smartphones don't pose as much of a threat to Nintendo.

But handheld PC's obviously do get those games and do pose a threat, and people are now in a situation where, if they want to play certain games portably, Nintedo isn't the only option anymore.

We need the handheld PC market to grow and put the fear of god in to Nintendo. It's currently still a very niche market, but it's also a very young one that's growing every year.
Very well-said.

Indeed, that's probably why, after years of just turning a blind eye to it, the current powers-that-be are now taking action in ways that they didn't before.
Exactly. And people think handheld PC's aren't competing with Nintendo Switch (1 and 2), but they are. Why? Because Nintendo has never been a good platform when it comes to 3rd party software sales, and these handhelds further pose a threat to that because now people are going to buy those games on their handheld PC of choice, instead of Nintendo's.

I'm the perfect example of that: since getting a Deck, I've stopped buying all Indie games on Switch like I used to. I have a gaming desktop and PS5 as well, but I used to buy them for Switch, for the sake of portability. But the Deck has completely negated that, so now Nintendo is not getting any of my software purchase for those games.

Quoting: Penglingwe've got a list going on over on the forum (yes, yes, second shameless plug guys, I'm sorry ) covering titles that hit the same general vibe and quality that Nintendo used to be known for. Please contribute if you know of any titles that should be on it!
Yes, I have 2 games, you should definitely add to the list:

The first is Palworld. It bears so much similarity to Pokémon that Nintendo and the Pokémon company were investigating a possible lawsuit [External Link].

The general idea is that it's "Pokémon with guns" and it's basically an open world survival game, like Ark and Rust, etc. So quite different from Pokémon, but still features "cute" monsters that you help you fight, etc.

It has already sold 25 million+, mostly on Steam, but it's also on Xbox and coming to more platforms.

It's the first truly objective sign that a Pokémon style game can be a massive success outside of Nintendo hardware in today's era. It also runs okay'ish (about 30fps) on Steam Deck.

The next is also a Pokémon-like, though we've heard very little on its development for the past 3-4 years. It's being developed by Pearl Abyss, the team behind Black Desert Online, so I don't think it's vapourware just yet.

It was one of the most talked about trailers of GamesCom 2021; it's Dokév:

This looks absolutely insane, and graphically far more ambitious that any Pokémon game. And again, they're aiming for a multiplatform release.

What we need is a world in which Nintendo is no longer relevant to the next generation of kids.

What we need is for developers to outright rip off Nintendo's style of games, but make them multiplatform.

That way, people and parents no longer have to feel reliant on buying Nintendo's consoles for those sort of games.

Pokémon, 3D Mario, 2D Mario, Smash Bros, Zelda, Metroid, Mario Kart or Animal Crossing are the main franchises which sell like 30 million copies every time, right? So we need clones of all of these games.

I hope tomorrows generation of kids are like "Nintendo-who?", "Mario-who?" and they go back to playing some 3D Mario ripoff (which hopefully is actually good) on their £40 Amazon Fire tablet, which their parents bought them.
