NVIDIA 555.42.02 Beta driver out bringing Wayland explicit sync

Quoting: nebadon2025I just installed 555 Beta driver on Kubuntu 24.04 and nothing is changed for me, everything still flickers like crazy in wayland, in my first 20 minutes or so of using it, it feels worse than 550 and 545 drivers did, steam is flickering like crazy now.
Kubuntu 24.04 chose to stay on Plasma 5, I'm unsure whether explicit sync is gonna apply there, or what version of XWayland it's on. It'll get Plasma 6 in 24.10.
KDE Neon's got the same Ubuntu LTS base, but it's on the latest Plasma 6. Maybe that's worth a shot.

The KINGDOM HEARTS games are finally coming to Steam in June

Oh, nice. I saw there was a PC port to these games, but I didn't want to buy them on Epic, everything I've taken for free on Epic I've promptly forgotten about. I think out of the dozens of games I've nabbed for free on Epic, I've only played two more than once, GTA 5 and Among Us. Didn't want to drop money on a game I'd forget I have because of the platform I have it on.

So, I'm excited for the Steam release here. I might give these games a shot with the PC port.

Really excited for this to come to my distro. I've just been kinda living with the flickering, but I'm hype that, pretty soon, I won't have to.

NVK driver gets DRM Format Modifiers to work with Gamescope in Mesa 24.1

Excited for the NVK drivers to land. Open-source Nvidia drivers have gone so far so fast. Ran the Heaven benchmark on Nouveau and it ran smoothly, when it used to run miserably.

I'll be down to swap to em when they hit Fedora.

All these pushes in the right direction make me think they were visited by three ghosts at some point.
Happy to see, this means I can keep this GPU in my system for as long as it is useful, which is probably a pretty long time.

With a Nintendo Switch 2 on the way, I hope Valve make a Steam Deck 2

Quoting: Kimyriellehe excuse typically is something like "Because Linux users are evil h4xx0rs and because open source is insecure by definition! Only closed-source operating system can ever be trusted."

Which doesn't help my impression of people using rootkit anti-cheat doing so because they're not very competent at coding or game-design. :D
Absolutely. The "Linux users are haxxors" excuse is so stupid, the people who cheat in video games are all dumbass script kiddies that use Windows. Linux users that are hackers have better things to do than cheat in a game.

Whole thing about open-source being insecure by definition is also dumb as a rock. Microsoft Windows is about as secure as a screen door on a submarine. Kernel level anti-cheat only exists because Windows is insecure enough to let programs meddle with Ring 0.

If, for example, the recent xz debacle happened on Windows, we wouldn't know a single solitary thing about it. Meanwhile, the second the backdoor was found, it was patched out of every distro.

Quoting: sarmadWhat I think should be included is improved APU, memory, and screen, VRR, and just more anti-cheat compatibility.
I feel Valve has done pretty much everything they can for anticheat compatibility. The issues that remain are the Hall Of Shame (Epic, Riot, Electronic Arts, Roblox, Bungie, etc.) that refuse to make the AC work because of whatever excuse they made up that day.

Ultimately, I hope the day of rootkit anticheat ends soon. Kernel-level nonsense has been tried before, and it broke computers and eventually finally died. [External Link]

Gods, seeing the team that made Hi-Fi Rush shutter hurts. That was a game I tried out on a game pass trial and I loved every second of it. Always hurts to see a game dev studio get bought out by a big company only to make a few games and shut them down after a year or two.

Most of my Jackbox sessions would get me banned from the Vatican already, I wonder how they'll add to that.

NVIDIA developer contributing to the open source NVK driver

I'm really glad to hear that NVK is being worked on with the help of NVIDIA employees.
Feels like soon enough, NVIDIA won't be this massive thorn in my side, and I can just use my GPU without driver complications getting in my way.
