Microsoft experiments with a handheld Windows 11 mode for Steam Deck

I don't get why folks are so opposed to this. While I appreciate wanting support to go towards Linux/Proton, some stuff just isn't going to make the transition (Looking at you Genshin Impact and other titles that require anti-cheat and such), so having a Windows UI that doesn't require I carry a 65% keyboard and try to pinpoint my mouse with the deck trackpad is a benefit in my eyes. Granted it's Windows 11 but still.

Returnal is just rough on Steam Deck but great on Desktop Linux

I can echo Liam's comment. It's not installing EGS, it's installing EOS. EOS (Epic Online Services) is used to, among other things, enable crossplay across storefronts and platforms. It's middleware, and the folks who are getting worked up over it should probably consider that Steam/Steamworks is also middleware. As for why it was used for this title instead of Steamworks, simple. It's running on a modified version of Unreal Engine 4, and I can only imagine that it's far easier to integrate tailor made middleware for the engine your game runs on.

That aside, has anyone noticed some weird flickering with shadows during their playtime? The cutscene where you get your pistol looked particularly bad for me. This was on Windows, but I figured I'd ask anyway.

Ubisoft just broke their games on Linux desktop and Steam Deck

Quoting: christofinCase in point: The racing game they just announced yesterday has a nice little EGS logo at the end of the trailer. Ubisoft doesn't give a single crap about their Steam customers.
"Grrr, EOS is bad?" Last I checked, EOS has been working for ages with Proton and Wine, so this just comes off as an odd complaint.
I think you're confusing the Epic Game Store (EGS) with the Epic Online Services (EOS). I think Christofin's comment was specifically that despite having started to bring these games back over to Steam, it's clear that it's not a "we're going to release everywhere at the same time again", it's "we made all the money we were going to make through EGS and Ubisoft Connect, so now Steam users can have the games". It's blatant padding of their bottom line, maximizing their revenue. And yeah, that's every business, but it's why I refuse to support them anymore, and actively advise folks spend their money elsewhere.

Quoting: MohandevirBecause they want your data! Anti-piracy measure? Because Steam permits offline play? It's become even more annoying than DRM (launcher in a launcher).

Edit: Thank you Ubisoft for not taking the time to test against Proton and make sure Valve doesn't have the time to make the corrections, before updating!
Considering all of their recent double dips (Read: Sales on EGS and through Ubisoft Connect have dipped to the point where we're willing to let Valve take their cut for some extra profits) have been the most bare bones efforts, I'm not surprised in the slightest that (seemingly) no effort was made to test for Linux/Proton compatibility. If anything, I'm sure that the consensus was "If it breaks, so what? Valve will fix it for us".

Watch Dogs: Legion from Ubisoft arrives on Steam, playable on Steam Deck

Understandable. Ultimately this is my own opinion on the game, and one that was formed due to a number of factors not just with the game itself, but outside of it with how Ubisoft was changing their launcher, so if you can enjoy it, more power to you. It was just a very big letdown for me and wanted to express that. I've at least heard positive things about the DLC campaign, given that you actually have defined player characters there (what a concept).

Instabuy. The next good handful of weeks gaming content is settled.
Hopefully this reaches you before it's too late: This is quite possibly the worst entry in the entire series. There is very little retained from the first game, much less the second. Play as anyone sounds good on paper but ultimately results in a story that relies on the antagonist(s) and supporting cast of defined characters since trying to create depth in characters that could be anyone is close to impossible. Mass hacks, calling in hits or forging an APB to create chaos between rival gangs or the police and gang factions are next to non-existent. The useable phone and the minigames, music player, on demand car deliver, etc. are gone completely. There's a pretty large chunk of lore and such to hear in the audio logs, but you can't play them while playing, you have to listen to them in a menu, or on the dedicated audio log channel in cars (can't choose which one you want, so hopefully you get one that you haven't heard before).

The long and short of it is this: Replay Watch Dogs, Bad Blood, or 2. You'll have a more enjoyable experience than you would playing this hot mess.

Paradox Interactive will be increasing game prices across a bunch of currencies

Quoting: RomlokAnd then there's the question of "do I really need to buy all the DLC"? There's a Pokemon-like urge we have to "catch 'em all", but the games with a lot of DLC generally have very little that are "must haves", especially when you're yet to get into the game, or don't give a hoot about cosmetics.
Funny enough, I recently came to the same conclusion with the overwhelming selection of (admittedly cheap individually) songs for the (soon to be delisted) game Fuser. I could pay hundreds of dollars for every song and cosmetic (some of which would be duplicate purchases due to bundles being included in that list), or I could just buy the songs I actually want to use.

I believe this is more or less the same thing that Motion Twin, the developer of Dead Cells, did recently, no? It looks bad on paper, but it's just adjusting the price to be more in line with the rest of the world, given that currencies like the Peso and Lira pay significantly less due to conversion rates than most other currencies.

All that being said, that's just my limited understanding on the matter, and coming from someone who's money isn't being hit by these changes, I understandably don't have the negative perception that others may have.

Multiplayer sandbox building game Brickadia heads to Steam next year

Reminds me a lot of Blockland, down to having human scale home maps, the design of the brick tiles, and even some of the aspects of the player model. Looks good anyway.

Woof, went Googling to see if there were any allegations of infringement or anything like that, found allegations of a different sort entirely.

Immortals Fenyx Rising now on Steam but quite messy on Steam Deck

I'd be making a liar of myself if I claimed I was shocked or surprised that Ubi hasn't even done the bare minimum in bringing these games back to Steam. Lack of support for achievements is an annoyance but one that I know is contentious at best, and actively dismissed otherwise, but this just smacks of laziness and a desire to pad out their Q4 income on the cheap. Haven't bought from Ubi since they gave me a copy of Watch Dogs Legion as a thank you (and boy, did that feel back handed), and I sure hope they don't think this will change my tune anytime soon.
