Larian Studios Detail Why The Linux Port Of Divinity Is Taking So Damn Long

Quoting: MaelraneDon't get me wrong, I appreciate any efforts taking to supporting Linux and I know how in software-development something always goes wrong ...
...
If I pledge toward a certain level and it gets reached I assume (naive boy that I am) that you will deliver before the end of time.
I'm a bit confused. What do you suggest they should have done?

Quoting: gilboaBTW, how's X:R compared to X3*? The initial reviews were very underwhelming, especially ones that were made by avid X2/X3 followers. Do you play the stock version or did you mod the game?

- Gilboa
I cannot say which one is better X Rebirth or X3 games because they are quite different. I have been playing X Rebirth much more recently and I'm happy about some design choices they have made; getting rid of SETA for example. Of course there is still problems but I think it is already very good game and excellent base for upcoming X titles.

For some reason instead of keep playing X3 many "X3 fans" are using their time bashing X Rebirth instead. It was well known that "next X title" was not going to be X4 as the name "X Rebirth" indicates it as well.

X Rebirth had very rocky start because of numerous of technical issues; stability problems, broken campaign, etc. So the question arise why Egosoft published the game in that condition. Although earlier X games has not been in stellar condition on release date either :). Luckily Egosoft has great and long lasting support for their games.

I play X Rebirth without mods and X3 series with mods.

Well, that was great post from Larian. Unfortunately this kind of things just happens sometimes. I can wait, patience is a virtue :)

Quoting: FeistJust started playing "X: Reunion", not very happy about it this far.

The start of the game simply dumps you in the seat of spaceship that seems to have a ton of options and various functions to become accustomed with.
Well, sounds like X game to me! ;)

Sorry to hear you had a bit rocky start. The game has a bit steep learning curve but it is not that hard when you learn the basics.

Quoting: gilboaIn my view, the story line of each of the game X3, X3:R/TC/AP is less interesting than the game itself. While I do take the time to finish the built in mission (and some, like X:R are actually quite good), the real game starts once you start playing the game in sandbox, read: customizing the game (E.g. Xtended on X3:R, XRM on X3:TC/AP), building a fleet, building stations (or later on, huge complexes), and once your strong enough, taking over the galaxy :)

- Gilboa
Yeah, totally agree. I think that sandbox is actually "the real X game" but the story helps you understand why things are as they are - if you are interested. I wouldn't mind if they start to push lore even further and in to game. Campaign are more or less just a tutorial to learn game mechanism. I have played about 250h X Rebirth so far and I have not even started the campaign yet. I'm planning to start it now while Alpha/Beta testing Linux version.

[quote=Feist]Thanks! Considering that the price-tags aren't very high, I think I might give it a chance. However, there is "Reunion" (2006), "Terran Conflict" (2008) and "Rebirth" (2013). A bit difficult deciding what to buy and what might (possibly) be better to skip.

Quoting: FeistIs there some advantage to playing these games in chronlogical order, or might I as well start with the latest (most modern by 5 years) game and get the others in case I should really fancy the most recent title?
They have story modes and the X universe has a lore so in that sense it would makes sense to play them in chronological order. There are some novels/books published as well and if I remember right a new one is coming.
In the other hand lots of players play them in a sandbox mode so it story/lore really doesn't matter. If you are interested in sandbox mode I would buy X3 Albion Prelude and X Rebirth. X3 and X Rebirth are somewhat different so it is really hard to say which one you should buy if you are going to get only one of them.

Quoting: pd12X: Rebirth is still out of my price range and I don't think I would buy it from the bug and game design issues people have been talking about.
Just for interest, what kind of game design issues?

I don't know anyone who plays X3 without mods because it has "game design issues" :)
There are plenty of mods for X Rebirth as well and more is coming. The latest release made the game more moddable.

Lots of "X series fans" got disappointed when they got X Rebirth and not X4. It is hard to push series forward and make bigger changes (fix X3 design issues) without making some gamers unhappy.

Quoting: FeistHowever, it has mostly negative reviews on steam and I feel a bit uncertain about it's appeal. Maybe waiting for "Star Citizen" is the way to go...
The game had really bumpy start but has improved drastically since then. Unfortunately the damage had already happened and the game got very bad reviews. Egosoft has always had bumpy starts but they have very long and great support for their games.

X games requires quite much time. They are not fast paced shooters or 30h game play games. People plays these games hundreds of hours. Reviews written by people who has played only 20h hours or less should take with grain of salt.

With this price tag I would definitely buy all games from X series. If you still have some spare money after that I would buy Elite: Dangerous and later Star Citizen as well (especially if they will be available for Linux).

Shadow Of Mordor Wins GDC Game Of The Year, Linux Version Due This Spring

Quoting: EKRboiThat is kind of sad to hear. Really makes me glad I didn't buy it at full price but also raises the question how in the hell did it win a GOTY award @ GDC of all places?
I don't understand why the game gets so much praises. It feels way too simple and straightforward for my taste. I like games I need to learn and use time with to master. M-E: Shadow of Mordor is nothing like that.

Quoting: EKRboiDue to its high profile and coming to Linux I will still feel obligated to buy it if nothing more than to support Feral. ASSUMING it is not just complete trash on Linux and I know Liam or one of the others will SURELY let us know ASAP <3
OK, despite I dislike the game I truly recommend all Linux users to buy it. Giving support for Feral for Linux versions is very important things to do at the moment. And since the game has won so many GOTYs it is quite likely that most of the Linux gamers likes the game as well :)

Shadow Of Mordor Wins GDC Game Of The Year, Linux Version Due This Spring

Quoting: EKRboiThis is going to mac too I believe. What worries me is that they will target the same OpenGL for both platforms leaving us with an older opengl core profile so it either won't look as good or it will look as good using extensions and performance won't be so great.
This is worrying indeed. If for example Digital Foundry makes a SteamOS review/benchmark this game could be one of tested games. If high-end PC with SteamOS can't compete against consoles it is going to be very bad.

Quoting: EKRboiI'll end up buying it either way because it has been a game I've been interested in. Was mostly just waiting for the price to come down because I wasn't $60 worth of interested so hopefully it turns out to be a fantastic port.
I think the game is one of the most overrated games released recently. It is extremely repetitive from the beginning and after an hour there nothing to see anymore. Nemesis-system is fun first 30 minutes but even that is boring and extremely simple if you have played Crusder Kings 2 (sure, different genre).
