Quoting: finaldestAt least prior generations had the advantage of physical media allowing game ownership. Now they want to kill the physical games media market also.

So I only buy physical games on PS5 now as SONY at least allows games to be played without updates but the bulk of my purchases are on PC simply because I trust Valve more than the competition to not somehow screw me over.
I mean as the physical games market is dwindling, there is GOG which is essentially the physical games market but digital (in terms of ownership), buy the game on GOG, download the files, those files should work forever (at least not stopped by DRM or online connectivity) so long as you ensure the copies are not lost

I can stream in discord on manjaro with kde plasma, in x11 session though

Anyway, plasma is good. When I tried to switch to linux for the first time, the weirdness of gnome was a big downside. Hours of tweaking it to make it feel write, while plasma just already has everything.
Works on Wayland just as well, using the xwaylandvideobridge [External Link] package from the AUR.
With some other applications it can sometimes be a hassle but I personally have good experience with screen sharing on KDE Plasma + Wayland + Discord Flatpak
For Wayland, I would recommend ArmCord, it uses xdg-desktop-portal but it is not perfect yet but definitely a big step up from normal discord as it allows addons and theming with Vencord

Skullgirls got review-bombed on Steam after some art changes

Quoting: chuzzle44You have my respect for remaining neutral and just reporting on the facts Liam. The ironic thing is that had something like this happened 10 years ago, I wouldn't have cared. But after watching franchise after franchise be destroyed by absolutely incompetent morons who fundamentally don't understand the appeal of the art and want to make a few changes to meet "modern" sensibilities, I can no longer stand by while it happens. I don't have a stake in this game. I've owned it for years, barely played it tbh. But for the people that do care, I stand with you. It doesn't matter if it's just small changes, "blink and you'll miss it", any change that is made for the purpose of appealing to people who don't actually love the art for what it is should be pushed against as much as possible. Because it won't stop. They never learn. They will "fix" something you actually care about eventually.
Yeah, if this isn't a thing already in Steam, the best compromise would be having a version select menu for games where you can choose which version you want, would satisfy all parties as I doubt a 10 year old game would get many updates and if it did, I guess they could make community patches for updates moving forward

Overkill drops Linux support for PAYDAY 2

Quoting: DrMcCoyInstead, you need to make portability a feature of your code outright, you need to make the same single codebase run on all the individual platforms. No forks, just one portable repository that can run everywhere. That's not new knowledge either, we've known that for decades!
Proton totally nuked this concept.
There is only one platform for personal computer gaming and it's DirectX.
Even Apple gave up dedicated ports, they went fully Wine [External Link].

Quoting: GroganI don't sympathize at all, moreover, these "corporations" are adversaries to me. They hate their customers and don't deserve to have any.

You put something out, that people bought in good faith and are still using, you bloody well fix it. You don't just say "too bad, we're adding new shitware to our game and have decided to exclude you"
Pretty much. It is far worse in my mind to say you are going to support a port, and then drop support while still updating the other platforms, than it is to never support Linux in the first place.

I'll just make sure to not buy anything from them later. Granted I never got around to playing Payback 2...
Honestly, this is likely a coincidence but it is funny, literally yesterday Epic Games gives away PAYDAY 2 for free and on that same day, Linux support is dropped

Yes, we bloody well are. You know that old question, what would you do if you had a time machine and could use it just once? You have no idea how many people answer that question, "Would go and rescue the books from the Library of Alexandria"; although my mother leans towards "Would go stop the fire that burned down the building that held all the Anglo Saxon literature that was ever written down".
You say that we're worse off as a species because the Library of Alexandria was destroyed. I'm curious in what way you think we're worse off, and what your basis is for claiming so.
Getting into deep philosophy here. In what way or for what reasons can you say any person, let alone the species, is "better off"? Any basis you propose can be readily disputed.

I personally think it is better to have wisdom than lack it, better to have knowledge than lack it, better to have stories than lack them. Being better off is not just about how many calories you consume. Many works of great philosophers, many accounts of history and mythology, were lost. Just having the missing Aristotle stuff would probably make a surprising difference to our thinking, considering how foundational the stuff we do have is. And as I recall, we know there is missing Aristotle stuff because other people's commentaries have referred to it. It's not just in physics where new thinkers stand on the shoulders of giants; philosophical and political thought also builds on the ideas of the past, and if we'd had more of them to build on, our whole intellectual tradition would be richer.
The only reason I asked is because you can't possibly answer without begging the question.
I'll hop in here for my fellow GURPS player; Imagine as it were that the internet and all it's knowledge was one day erased. You could no longer look up answers on wikipedia, you could no longer search for stepsister pr0n. All knowledge of scientific discoveries were only kept in the brains of old people that would eventually die off.

The burning of the library of Alexandria is pretty much the ancient equivalent of that. People from all over the (known to the Old world) world would go to Alexandria to study everything about science, philosophy, religion, etc. The burning of Alexandria literally started what many historians refer to as 'the dark ages'. We didn't have anything similar until the renaissance. Now imagine if we were about 1400-1500 years more advanced than we are now... Granted maybe we would have destroyed ourselves 300 years ago :P
Funny. All of you have NO IDEA how the library of Alexandria got such a large collection of texts.
Basically every ship that stopped in the port of Alexandria got searched for texts (papyri etc.) and everything that was found was brought to the library where it was COPIED and the originals were given back to the ship.

Yes, the librarians of ancient Alexandria were FILTHY PIRATES. They should have been hanged for such a large scale operation in COPYRIGHT INFRINGEMENT.

Good thing the library of Alexandria burned down! And a sad thing the criminals didn’t burn with it.
You realize that copyright laws didn't exist back then and the only way written words were passed onto each other was by way of copying the text by hand? Why do you think flat earth came about and keeps coming about? Uneducated idiots. People knew the earth was a globe in ancient times. Hell, they knew about the precession of the equinox. We would probably not be arguing constantly about how the pyramids were built if the Library of Alexandria had not burned...

You may as well accuse the Christian Monks of being filthy pirates, as they too would copy documents all the time.
I wouldn't pay any mind to benstor214, I am 99% sure they are a troll based on how extreme and overdramatic they are being. If they aren't a troll..... yikes

Edit: after reading their later responses, 100% a troll, intellectual property over human life, if they are serious... they might need to be incarcerated

I mean there is definitely a reason that archaeologists and museums exist, to find, showcase, and preserve old history that were previously lost to human history before discovery.

Quoting: Mountain ManYes, let's pretend that the overwhelming majority of people using emulators aren't also playing pirated software.
Let's say that is the case, is that wrong? If so why is it wrong? Pirating games that are no longer officially produced or sold on consoles that are no longer officially produced or sold, is that wrong? The only argument that makes sense for copyright law that I've seen is to protect sales, but what sales are there left to protect?
What if the owning company decides to release them tomorrow, but everybody who's interested already pirated them yesterday?
Not convinced...
I believe there was a certain study by the EU that found that piracy only affected sales in one area and that was movie sales. But feel free to provide your own evidence or correct me on the findings of that study.

Whether or not you agree with the law as it stands is irrelevant.
Ah, so to you it is irrelevant if it is morally correct or not (or the actual purpose of the law), but whether it is legal or not. I hope you will reflect on how you gauge what is wrong if the law ever tries to outlaw something like End-to-End Encryption (they have a few times and thankfully failed)
