GOL World Tour: Linux Gaming From Germany
30 Sep 2014 at 3:04 pm UTC

I think that Germany (compared to its economic strength and population) is a very underdeveloped country when it comes to the games industry.
Sadly, I have to agree with you. It's not that there aren't a lot of good games from Germany, but proportional to its population (highest in Europe) and GDP (again, highest in Europe) there should really be a lot more. Argentina has a population half of Germany's and a GDP closer to tat of Belgium (7x less than Germany) while Norway has a population 20x less than Germany, and both countries managed to pull off a similar amount of games. Of course, Germany has a couple more bigger studios than these countries, but considering Germany has a 10 year head start, they might well catch up soon.

But if we look at the adventure genre individually, the phrase "Jack of all trades, master of none" really doesn't apply there - maybe its better that they have mastered one genre and be well known for that.

By any chance, are you a HRE fan in the Europa Universalis series?
Yes ;). In fact I just came back to EU4 after promising myself never to play it again (results in lack of sleep and turning into a zombie) and I'm trying to become emperor as Venice, which is no easy feat but getting there!

It seems Deponia will be available for Linux on Steam soon.
I mentioned it in the article already! But it's a shame they're doing Deponia first considering we have the trilogy already on Linux and not the Dark Eye games (which I really enjoyed).

I LOL'ed so hard with that reference.
Glad someone got it ;)

Same topic different City...Köln != Cologne
Yeah, I was debating whether to use the German name or the English one, but since I don't have the "ö" symbol on my keyboard, I went for Cologne instead (also the reason I did it with Düsseldorf).

Quoting: DrMcCoyDüsseldorf. The diacritics are important. If you can't type "ü", use "ue", i.e. Duesseldorf
Changed :)

The Sunday Gaming Section, Linux Gaming From Around The Web

What are you planning to play this fine Sunday?
Managed to complete the Tropico campaign, but it froze when the victory message came up so never got to see the final cutscene. Was pleasantly surprised with the game actually, not huge changes from the last two so don't regret getting it on sale, but they really refined the gameplay to a point where it's a lot more enjoyable and challenging so glad I got it.

I myself am looking at a 970
So jealous :><:

New Steam Store, Lots Of New Stuff

No one seems to have picked up on the nice little feature where it tells you if it requires 3rd party EULA/DRM on the right of the store page (underneath the little list where it says if it has controller, trading card support, etc.).

That's quite a subtle, but very nice feature. It would make the difference between buying and not buying the game in many case for me. Remember getting FF7 to re-play it through Wine and having to receive a rectal exam from Square Enix just so I could play - if I'd known I would have pirated it (or got the PS1 from the attic) just to spite them.

We are also now curators to help you find games to buy.
I thought about GOL as soon as I saw that feature. How are you going to do it? Recommend anything that runs well on Linux pick and choose favorites? The first might be a good option because then GOL can act as kind of a "Linux seal of approval", might encourage devs to make good ports and its useful for Linux gamers who want to know how good the port is.

Come on Valve, "PC" is not an operating system. Although trying to fight that argument is pretty much a dead horse now.
That's all Apple's fault really with the whole "I'm a Mac, I'm a PC" rubbish. Basically, when Jobs returned, Apple hired this guy called Clotaire Rapaille who is a "marketing guru" (pathological liar and Machiavellian narcissist) who attempts to access the "reptilian brain" (irrational subconscious) of the consumer. Consumers perceived PCs as being overcomplicated, unreliable and ugly, and he discovered that the reptilian codeword for technology was "magic" so the result was that Apple distanced itself from the word "PC" and marketed its PCs as "magic" new devices that are somehow different from ordinary computers underneath (presumably running on the tears of unicorns or something) which are simple, reliable and "beautiful". So when you next see someone spending £900 on a macbook and think its irrational, that's because it is.

Rapaille in action: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Cbq6lUgG8gA [External Link]

The converse effect is that after years of marketing Windows became synonymous with the word PC considering that for most people Apple and Windows are the only choices on the market. Maybe its why Linux has been slow to take off - using it is too much of a logical decision for 21st century consumer reptilian zombies.

(sorry, off topic but drives me nuts too)

Shroud of the Avatar: Forsaken Virtues RPG Needs Greenlight Help
21 Sep 2014 at 6:01 pm UTC

$5 million is crazy. I'll vote for it on greenlight, but with all the disappointments lately, I'll hold off giving any money until its at beta level.

The game looks very good though, that building and customization stuff is likely to be very popular considering how much of it went on in skyrim and these features look less clumsy.

Tropico 5 Officially Released For Linux
19 Sep 2014 at 8:15 pm UTC

correct, i just edited my post.
Damn, you got my hopes there :p. seems like a pretty decent site, would be good if they start doing Linux soon.

Guess I'll have to wait a bit for tropico, maybe next month if there's no sale by then. Spent way too much on games recenly and still haven't got through some of the summer sale stuff, keep getting distracted with new games.

Tropico 5 Officially Released For Linux

The game is $13.99(US) @ dlgamer.us for anyone interested.
Are you sure that's not just a Windows download? Can't find any mention of a Steam key and don't know what a Kalypso Launcher key is or whether their launcher even works on Linux.
