Popular multiplayer code editor Zed gets a Linux release

To go along with @akselmo and @wvstolzing -- my experience was poor too.
I can't even launch it on Arch Linux & Sway.
I have 0 interest in "AI" in my editor -- that's just a buzz word like "The Cloud" where it means everything will be enshitified.
"Multiplayer"? What is "Multiplayer"? Like "Multi-user" -- it feels juvenile. old_man_yelling_at_clouds.jpg
To their credit I am very interested in that it is made in Rust.
The GitHub = Git thing is absolutely daft, tonedeaf and ludicrous.
LMAO. NGL that's pretty funny. What a mess.
I know this is a little judgemental and may be a bit premature as it will take time to see -- but they are reminding me of Manjaro a bit.
This bug precisely underscores why a lot of folk like to use old tried and true things instead of "The New Shiny".
Me personally, I don't have the time I used to have to delve into new software daily. The $99 I paid for Sublime Text already paid off in multiples due to time saved.
Atom Editor used to open waaaaayyyy to slowwww. Sublime was faster, and I could easily open 100 - 1,000 files or even a PHP Project with 10k files when I needed to a recursive Find & Replace.
I am willing to give Zed some slack, some good will (for now), while they get it together because they are new and interesting, but so far it seems like they are off to a cold start.
I will credit them with any innovations they coin if other editors copy them too. We'll see -- hopefully they are not full Manjaro.

Quoting: akselmoYou can luckily toggle off the AI bullshit from the settings but it being plastered everywhere really tells me who the audience is, and I don't think it's me. Also they seemed to equate Git with Github, because only Github services were supported.Hit that nail on the head. I don't think the audience is me either -- I'm not a l33t teen coder looking to show off -- but to their credit maybe that is the strategic market to appeal to who knows SMS.
The GitHub = Git thing is absolutely daft, tonedeaf and ludicrous.
Quoting: akselmoOn positive side though, it was very easy to get going with it and the config, while being editing json files (why??), was still alright experience.I'm cool with the JSON thing, probably because I haven't actually seen another configuration format that I feel is better than JSON is easy to parse with jq in scripts. I feel like JSON is Gen 2 of configuration formatting, and I can't wait to se what Gen 3 is. YAML?
Quoting: akselmoEdit: https://github.com/zed-industries/zed/issues/12589 [External Link] oh noZed downloads NodeJS binary and npm packages from Internet without user’s consent #12589

It hurts to find out first hand. The buying of Github, I feel bad for MineCraft fans. It was already bad enough Microsoft bought out Halo when it was already a Mac-first game around Y2K.
Sucks. But I'm glad people see it now and are not going to be surprised when they try to pull leverage in The Linux Foundation and all their bureaucracies to get the insider scoop and hurt us more.
Hell they ripped off KDE Plasma theme, Workspaces, it'll be funny to see what they rip of next -- Scrolling Tiling Window Management? Thieves.
Peak Microsoft.

Quoting: dmoonfire[...] Atom [...] contributed a decent amount of code. When Microsoft canned it, it was heartbreaking because all my work was basically just canned.Sorry for your loss, I remember being extremely unpopular 5 or 10 years ago warning everyone during the "Microsoft <3 Linux" phase, that based on decades of behavior [ Eg: SCO vs Novell Linux lawsuit funded by Microsoft ], Microsoft was still the same.

Valve fixes up the new Riven from Cyan Worlds videos on Linux / Steam Deck

The new version has been done well and earned my dollar. I bought it.
I love to see old games given tender loving care and am happy to pay. What I'm not happy to do is buy these insults of a "Remastered" like Square Enix FF6 and Chrono Trigger -- those are both epic games and the cellphone look + smudge art really is a disservice and they should be ashamed to try to sell such half-assed games. Same goes for FF8 Remastered -- a total mockery of 8.
In total contrast to the new Myst and new Riven. I would easily pay for all of these games at full price if they followed in* Riven's footsteps.
I have heard first-hand stories relayed to me about the development behind myst and the blacked out windows and constant flow of coffee before they first came out. Absolute mad-lad developers, much respect.

Nexus mods want feedback from Linux / Steam Deck users on their new cross-platform app

Having been there before Proton dropped there was a large discussion in the Linux Community over the cost/benefit analysis of giving up native ports for native-wine ports. There was a large concern that Proton would be bad for the future of Linux gaming.
And now years in the future we see the effects. So many 3rd parties even Microsoft, and Sony have deployed to Steam Deck and therefore Linux.
I fire up a hand coded Wine Bottle Shell Script and the differences between 2024 and 2019 or 2016 are night and day. Most things "Just Work" as a result of Valve funding CodeWeavers, WINE, DXVK, SDL and others to solve problems. They partner with AMD and Nvidia to solve graphics issues with great success and have done major work in the Linux kernel as a faithful steward of Linux & Humanity.
In any case, back to the original sentiment -- The Chicken and Egg paradox is solved when I see headlines like this. Well done everyone -- I know a lot of Baldurs Gate people that will be happy to use a mod manager like this (although I know they are also happy with Steam Workshop coming too.)

Stardew Valley was made because Harvest Moon SNES never got a proper successor for decades by a super fan turned dev tycoon.
This was made because ??? Stardew Valley made a lot of money ???
Which to me makes it feel like it's a: "The Product".
I won't know if it has a soul or not until the reviews start to roll in.
It's graphically "adequate", but as the Nausicaan's say: "you talk and you talk, but you have no guramba!"
We will see if it has guramba or not.

GOG is having a sale right now too.
Which is how I learned about the Sequel to Myst -- Riven just came out 3 days ago.
https://www.gog.com/en/game/riven [External Link]
https://store.steampowered.com/app/1712350/Riven/ [External Link]
Which is especially interesting because of the VR element.
Looking for Steam Deck / LAN games -- something tells me I'll be making some purchases for my weekly weekend LAN party. I just hope to get some good Steam Deck and games that run on mid-grade potatoes.
As dumb as it sounds, Left 4 Dead 2 @ 99 cents was actually a really fun play on Steam Deck last week.
Maybe it's time for a CS2 Poolday throwback :P
By all means please tell us what you're buying and your favorite / most clocked hour gamess @all

Valve adds the first community maps into Counter-Strike 2

Such an epic map to see in this quality. Awesome!
--
I really enjoyed the Bedroom and Bathroom maps, they were especially fun with Snipers.
--
Then there's the Buck Nasty surf maps of CSS which never made it to CSGO in all their glory. Especially with the RPG+DeathMatch server mods.
--
Iceworld! I could easily see Iceworld joining the list after years of fun! ( My favorite is the 2 levels one from CSS)

DRM lease protocol support finally merged for GNOME Wayland - great for VR fans

Quoting: CybolicAwesome, I actually happen to current use Gnome with my Index in the living room. Although I have been steadily been switching to everything Sway. In any case normalizing Index VR on Wayland will trickle down my way I'm sure -- very excited to get a more definitive experience for __ videos __ gaming __ vr __ video editing __ and whatever else -- Wayland is doing pretty good.Quoting: ElectricPrismThe use-case isn't obvious to me. Maybe I'm just tired. That should be it, yes. Currently, starting up (e.g.) SteamVR while using Gnome on Wayland won't work, it won't pass on the display output to the VR headset; with this new work merged, it will.
So this allows you to play VR Games on Gnome Wayland? Is that it or is there something more to this like a Gnome VR Desktop or something.
