8BitDo Ultimate 2 is getting full Steam Input support for more buttons
30 Apr 2025 at 10:53 pm UTC

"8BitDo Ultimate 2.4G Controller" -- It was really nice having a switch on the bottom of the controller to switch between 2.4Ghz and Bluetooth modes -- personally I have had so many bad years with Bluetooth input lag I am basically just done with it RF is superior in both range and speed empirically.

The 2.4 doesn't always map correctly with other apps even outside steam, and it's made in Shenzhen just next to Hong Kong so I probably won't be getting the v2.

The experience is generally better than other controllers, and people have commented they like the feel and texture, and to their credit they seem to generally do a really good job.

The other products receive criticism for software being Windows only and in Chinese (Not sure if they fixed that with their Keebs)

Linux Gamers are still halfway choosing beggars though -- I would love to just go with a classic controller and swap out new internal RF components, there are enough controller shells that are legendary enough to be a great fit for modding.

I just want to remind everyone that Blizzard-Activision is now a subsidiary of Microsoft.

The same as GitHub, Mojang and others.

The blob grows.

If you can get a key and get it on GOG that's great. I consider GOG and Steam different than others, I have daily snapshots of my Steam library and even if the internet were to disappear tomorrow I could revert snapshots and fire up the offline-mode and play my collection 20 years in the future so long as I have a offline copy of the files and there isn't any online DRM blocker.

To Amazon's credit, I am checking them out and their cloud content which can be revoked is clearly labeled, so there isn't this false sense of buying a copy in that category.

After Epic I have become leery and skeptical, if it contains a significant DRM or I don't get a offline copy that I can boot it's just not worth my money -- and I have plenty to spare. I'm not going to vote against my interests as a consumer with my dollar.

Stadia was also a disaster, and as a creature of habit Steam is literally the beacon of Consumer PC Gaming, Amazon would have to sell offline Installers to become relevant on my radar.

And they do this with MP3 -- I am happy to buy MP3's, even happier to buy FLAC's -- it's just if I don't get a copy of what I'm buying then it's not a deal.

More important than there being lots of free incentives I think they would be wise to focus on making the service convenient -- taking all the labor out of buying, managing and downloading the content. I'd like better sales on premium content -- I have at least a few hundred Itch.io games and there's only so many that you need -- some people hoard free ketchup and hot sauce packets from fast food.

I like these articles, but Amazon needs to step up their game with Game Manager and API or a Amazon SteamOS Handheld or something to become a relevant player in the PC Gaming space, and there's so many ways they could screw it up following current Trendie tech to do "Cloud-Streaming" that I'm not holding my breath, I think the odds are stacked against them that they create a biome that optimizes Gamer's Interests and installs them as a permanent player in PC Gaming.

It could happen but I'm not really holding my breath. YMMV, and if you can get some of their stuff free on GOG go for it!

Does anyone really trust Amazon as a digital content store?

I mean, the licenses are written in such a way that buying isn't owning so your purchases can just be turned off some day or if the content doesn't adhere to popular social trends they just butcher it.

Amazon has never been a champion in consumer trust for the same reasons that Epic fails and Google Stadia failed.

Whenever some platform does "Free" too it comes off as some kind of time-share sales pitch -- is it really worth it to get roped into a platform that can just go ** poof **

Diversification of content sources is a fine thing, but it's not like gamers aren't already fat on the good life with Steam.

Amazon being involved in gaming already feels like a failed venture.

World of Goo 2 comes to Steam with new levels on April 25

Before they used to sell it on Humble Bundle ( https://humblebundle.com/store/world-of-goo-2 [External Link] )

Is this how they previously did "Direct Purchase" delivery? It seems a little confusing.

I think they are smart to make a big update part of their April 25th launch.

This looks like a awesome find, it combines elements of some really successful and fun genres, if they get the Steam Deck performance up then it'd be a perfect game to pass the time when waiting in a car for someone.

It seems like new games capitalize on old styles to generate interest.

My emotional reaction to the sight of this game is beyond ecstatic, but just like Selaco -- I jump over to the store page and see "Single-Player", or rather the things that "could" make this awesome for me personally are just not there.

Stardew Valley did the Harvest Moon SNES formula right.

Selaco didn't due the Duke Nukem 3D Megaton formula right in my view.

This to me is in the Twisted Metal genre and it at least presently or foreseeable lacks PvP split screen Multiplayer or Multiplayer in general which basically undermines the point of the genre, even a offline PvP would do wonders to make this buy-worthy for me.

There are plenty of untapped multi million-dollar markets waiting for the right person to fit the bill. Not that income is the __only__ goal, but I do think it is really nice when your indie passion project can generate enough wealth the sustain future game dev ventures and take being a starving programmer off the table.
